Legacy FC 27 results: Means scores quick win, Cejudo grinds out Garcia
Welterweight striker Tim Means (20-5-1) is now 2-0 since his UFC release after earning a quick stoppage win over Artenas Young (10-7).
The bout served as the main event of Friday’s Legacy Fighting Championship 27 event, which took place at Houston’s Arena Theatre and aired on AXS TV.
The two engaged quickly on the feet, with both looking to establish range in the early going. As Young looked to open with a straight punch, a Means knee scored flush, and Young dropped to a kneeling position. Means capitalized with a flurry of punches that landed flush to his downed opponent, and the bout was quickly halted.
A briefly wobbly Young returned quickly to his feet to protest the stoppage, but the bout had already been called just 98 seconds after it began.
In the night’s co-feature, Olympic gold-medal wrestler Henry Cejudo (6-0) earned a decision win over Elias Garcia (4-1), but the performance was marred by Cejudo’s inability to make weight for the flyweight matchup.
In the early going, Garcia wobbled his opponent with an early right hand, but Cejudo pushed inside and immediately took the fight to the floor. Garcia worked hard to get back to his feet, and they reset in the center.
Cejudo continued his grinding attack, landing short punches and elbows in the clinch and securing a few takedowns along the way. Garcia was able to get back to his feet each time, but he lost valuable points along the way.
Cejudo’s wrestling proved superior again in the second frame, as he took the fight immediately to the ground and this time secured a solid base. Garcia did finally work to his feet, but Cejudo kept the positioning tight and smothered his opponent in the clinch.
It was more of the same in the third, as Cejudo simply pushed his opponent to the floor and controlled the positioning and pace of the contest for the remainder of the matchup. In the end, he was granted a clearcut decision win, 30-27 on all three cards.
While Cejudo remains undefeated, he’s had multiple issues with making weight, and his commitment level to the sport remains questionable despite his obvious upside.
