Knee injury scratches UFC vet Matt Hamill from WSOF 11
Matt Hamill (11-5) will have to wait a bit longer to make his debut for WSOF.
WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdelaziz on Wednesday told MMAjunkie the veteran light heavyweight suffered a knee injury and will be unable to appear in the promotion’s debut on NBC at WSOF 11, which is scheduled for July 5 at Ocean Center in Daytona, Fla.
The exact knee injury Hamill sustained is unknown; MMAjunkie couldn’t reach the fighter or his reps for comment.
Hamill, 37, signed with WSOF seven months after his exit from the UFC, which came on the heels of a 1-3 run in the octagon. He retired from competition in 2011 following a lackluster TKO loss to current No. 1 contender Alex Gustafsson, but he returned one year later with a decision win over Roger Hollett at UFC 152.
A decision loss to Thiago Silva at this past fall’s UFC Fight Night 29 event marked Hamill’s most recent fight.
A veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 3,†Hamill won his first three UFC fights before his first professional setback, which came via a highly controversial decision to Michael Bisping at UFC 75.
WSOF officials announced the signing of Hamill in May. The fighter subsequently announced he’d be part of the July 5 WSOF card, which takes place the same day as UFC 175.
