Former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone at the Jan. 7 "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" event.

That's according to Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer, who today emailed the event's drug-testing results to MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com).

When today contacted by MMAjunkie.com, Lawal denied using any banned substances.

All other fighters from the Las Vegas show tested negative for performance-enhancing drugs and drugs of abuse.

Lawal (9-1 MMA, 4-1 SF) scored a second-round knockout of Lorenzo Larkin at the event, which took place at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Lawal, who was fighting for the second time since losing his Strikeforce belt, fought in the night's Showtime-televised main card.

Barring a successful appeal, Lawal faces a one-year suspension, a fine, and the overturning of the win to a no-contest.

Drostanolone (also known as Drolban or Masteron) often is used as a diuretic among weight-cutting and recovering/injured athletes, according to various online sources.

Other fighters tested at the event include Luke Rockhold, Keith Jardine, Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley, Tarec Saffiedine, Tyler Stinson, Nah-Shon Burrell, James Terry, Gian Villante, Trevor Smith, Ricky Legere, Chris Spang, Estevan Payan and Alonzo Martinez. All tested negative.

Stay tuned to MMAjunkie.com for more on this story, including reaction from Lawal.

I don't see why diuretics are banned anyway, it isn't a PED as such and shouldn't be held to the same standard as testosterone cheats.

If it helps a guy cut weight, surely thats better than coming in 12lbs over a la Anthony Johnson?

Knew it wasn't going to take long for Rampage to respond to this.

You just knew when Muhammed Lawal failed a drug test for anabolic steroids, someone would seek out his arch nemesis, Quinton Jackson, to get his opinion.

"He talk a big game, he say all this stuff, he's calling people bums and everything and it's just karma. Look at him. He's a very cocky individual. I feel like any fighter that has to use steroids to go in a cage and fight somebody is not a true fighter. Some people have problems, like okay, go to the doctor and get it sorted out. There are some fighters out there who are of age and they're doing the right things to stay healthy and stay competitive but somebody blatantly taking anabolic steroids to get in the cage, it's a sad case. It's a sad case."

Cause its still a steroid. Better to just ban them rather than say oh this one is okay and that one is okay cause then you're going to create a slippery slope as to which is allowed, which isn't, how much of each is allowed and passable and how much isn't. And it could create a huge mess... so just outright taking them all out is the smarter move in the long run.

Yeah, like they are doing with testosterone treatment?

It's a double standard, lets not get it twisted.

Chael Sonnen and Dan Henderson can 'legally' use a banned substance to help them win fights, yet King Mo gets suspended for trying to cut weight?

lol

the testosterone is an entirely different thing. They aren't using it to cheat, they aren't using it to win. Plus they have medical clearance to use it because their level of testosterone starts to drop and so with medical clearance they get to use it to raise their levels to what is NORMAL for their age. They aren't elevating it to gain any kind of advantage. They are using it to regain what they lost and reach the NORMAL level.

To use something to cut weight is entirely different. For that you have your nutritionist, your dietician, your workouts, you have all of that. All of that is not going to help regulate your testosterone. That is why it is on a different level. And it isn't on the same plain as what King Mo did.
