Kevin Owens talks wrestling future

Kevin Owens isn't sure what the future holds for his wrestling career.

The 39-year-old still has approximately a year and a half left on the three-year deal he signed with WWE in late 2021. Owens recently told the Toronto Sun that he's not certain what's next for him once his current deal expires.

“I really don’t know," Owens said. "I used to say I don’t see myself not being in the ring for another five to 10 years. And if I said it right now, I’d be lying because over the last few months, I have to admit, I don’t know if that’s true anymore."
“I look at things and I don’t know where I stand going beyond the next year and a half. I know I want to be involved in wrestling. I know I want to be involved in the WWE and I know I have a place here. I just don’t know where it is exactly. Maybe it’s still in the ring, maybe it’s not. I don’t know.”

Owens continued to say that he's focused on enjoying the next year and a half of his career as much as possible. Having headlined WrestleMania against Steve Austin, won the tag titles at WrestleMania with his longtime friend Sami Zayn, and being a former Universal Champion means Owens doesn't have many goals left to achieve. Instead, he just wants to create fun memories for fans to remember him by.

“I think for the next year and a half, my focus is just on enjoying everything I do as much as possible,” he continued. “There’s not really a worry about winning a title or main-eventing WrestleMania or any of that stuff anymore, which are the dreams that everybody has because I’ve been so blessed and I’ve gotten to do all of that. So I just want to have fun and I want to give people fun times to remember me by."
“Whether this is the end for my wrestling, I don’t know and I don’t want to sound dramatic, I don’t want to say this is a retirement speech or anything because I might still be wrestling for 10 years. I have no idea. My thought process right now is just to try to enjoy the next year and a half as much as I possibly can because I don’t know what’s on the other side. That’s really all I’m worrying about.”

Our own Dave Meltzer reported in December 2021 that the deal Owens signed was in the $2-3 million range. He first signed with the company in the summer of 2014 and debuted in NXT later that year. In his time with WWE, Owens is a former NXT Champion, Universal Champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion, three-time United States Champion, and one-time WWE Tag Team Champion along with Sami Zayn. He was voted "Best Brawler" in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards for three straight years from 2010-12 and his feud with El Generico was voted Feud of the Year in 2010.

Good to see that he's just taking it with time. There are a lot of rough miles on those tires so I could see him really have a hard choice for him on whether he wants to be in the ring or not if/when WWE gives him his next contract.
