Never used one before. Anyone here have one? Any tips for a first time star gazer such as myself?

I used to, when I was like 5.
Then again, I was 5, and I didn't know how to use it, and I still dont.
With that beign said, this post is virtually useless :D

Do those things actually help you see the planets? Like seriously?

^ Shut up imo. Stop trying to fit in.

Anyway, I have a telescope and I used it once and saw something with it. A useful tip is to point it at the sky, and it being nighttime always helps. :)

Wow, such resentment towards telescopes from everyone in here...lol.
I'm in the same boat. I have really nice one..quite expensive I'm told...which I found in my fiance's grandmas attic. It currently resides in my basement which upon further though probably isn't the best place of a star gazing object....
But yeah. I'm pretty sure there isn't much to actually using the thing. Just a steady hand because much like photography when you're zoomed in that far even the slightest movement is a big deal. I know mine has a little nut that locks it into place once you get to where you wanna be.
There are astronomy websites that'll tell you how to find certain stars and contellations and how to read the coordinates for shit. I bring mine when I go out to the country...where I live there really aren't too many stars.

My dad has one, and we've been meaning to set it up for ages. I'm really interested by space and all that stuff.

I've always been interested in using a telescope, just never had. Stars intrigue me, tbh.

I will have to think of getting a telescope. Though, I have heard it is difficult, getting it into focus and all. And the positioning must be exact.

I never took it with me from Australia over to Israel but we used to have one. And we had some great photo's of the moon at night time. Telescopes are really great if you are interested in Space.

Have any more brilliant advice?

Nope.

If you're looking at the sky when it seems darker than usual then you're likely to see better with a telescope. But when there are many stars visible in the sky at first sight then you're not going to see anything 'magical' with a telescope and won't be able to focus on any particular object because everything else is too bright.
