If you're like me, you expected Rashad Evans to receive the first crack against Jon Jones should he defeat Jones' injury-replacement Phil Davis. It's a grudge fight. It's a money fight. It makes sense. Now, strange news from Jones during an interview with 1260 the Score in Syracuse (transcript by Sports Radio Interviews):

I had to postpone my first title defense against Rashad Evans due to some torn tissues in my thumb. My last doctor's appointment they told me I should be able to get back to full out training within the next month. I'm excited about that. I'm expected to compete against Lyoto Machida or Rampage Jackson in maybe October, mid-October.

The UFC has unofficial events scheduled for October 8 (in Houston) and October 15 (in Liverpool). That would give Evans 9 or 10 weeks to prepare if he defeats Davis.

I have no clue what to make of this. I can't imagine Evans would turn down a chance to fight Jones given time to put in a full camp (especially considering making up for lost time). It doesn't seem like the UFC would want to pass up on an opportunity to make a fight with a real, legitimate emotional core.

Perhaps Jones is playing mind games, trying to put doubt into Evans' head about the prospects of their fight.

Regardless, this will look bad for Jones if Evans emerges victorious at UFC 133 and Jones fights Machida or Jackson instead.
