Mega Powers.. Swanton Mania.. Plus Sized Divas.. The Eagles Down Under.. Hulk Veto???.. Heyman is Alive and Well.. Sooners in Thick of National Title Hunt.. “Q†Biz is Great!
Feedback Time:
I was asked if I preferred the name “Mega Powers†vs. The Monster Maniacs when referring to Hogan and Savage and I personally like the “Mega Powers†the better. Original material is generally better than a re-hash or a repackaged persona.
Warren- I was pleasantly surprised when Jeff Hardy’s Swanton at WM16 won the fan poll on WWE.com. It was one helluva move and a giant risk that Jeff took and obviously today’s fans who voted, loved it. If Jeff were in a position to talk more on TV, with his charisma and in ring abilities, there is no telling how big a star Jeff might become.
Jamie in the UK- Do I feel that TNA starting a women’s division will affect the WWE Divas? Uh, no Jamie I don’t.
Joshua- Cable TV has changed the way wrestling used to be syndicated on local TV and I don’t see syndication ever becoming a large part of any wrestling company’s TV network. I have never been specifically told what the WWE is looking for as it relates to physical attributes of a potential wrestler. I would assume that an athlete over six feet tall would have an edge, considering all things equal. My point has always been that smaller athletes (under six feet) should not automatically be eliminated because of their height. Lots of great stars over the years would not have had a career had all promoters had the six feet or over rule.
Mandy- Speaking of size, do I ever see “plus sized†Divas making an impact in the WWE? Loaded question. My instincts say “no†but if the right situation arose and the “plus sized†lady was athletic, any thing is possible, I assume.
Steve- I “think†a Curt Hennig DVD is in the works. Last I heard it was on the table.
Daniel- Indeed I love the band “The Eagles†and will check out the DVD recorded in Australia. The Eagles’ new single is a great, clean song. I love music when I can actually understand what is being sung. But you know I love my boys ZZ Top even more than my beloved Eagles.
Phil- Your fantasy booking with all the legends, many of whom are not physically able to compete at a level that they would be comfortable with, looks good on paper and might make a great video game but in practical application might be a little dicey.
Stephan- I had fun broadcasting with Heenan and Savage back in the early 90’s. Both men brought something different to the presentation. Heenan was more of a comedian, while Savage was the analyst of the trio and spoke from a wrestler’s point of view. I just had to keep the rudder in the water and let Savage and Heenan get their stuff in. Three man booths are really challenging to master and I personally prefer the two man booth, if given the option.
DOC- I am happy you enjoyed the WWE live event in Paris, France a week or so ago. I know the wrestlers loved Paris and said the crowd was red hot and a blast to compete and perform for. A hot crowd always goes a long way in making any event a better presentation.
Mike- I never heard the tale of Hulk vetoing several wrestlers off a possible list of opponents. I think that rumor is just that, as Hogan would wrestle anyone who would help sell tickets. And anyone who would not want to wrestle Hogan back in the day would have to be an idiot, unless they just simply did not like to earn money.
Barry- I would not suggest any Edge retrospective DVD until Edge has made his successful (hopefully) return and continues to have landmark successes. In hindsight, Edge writing a book so early in his career was iffy. I enjoyed the story and commend Edge for being so honest and for working so hard on the book during his rehab for neck surgery. I will be really happy to see Edge back on TV.
Jason- I have not spoken to Paul Heyman since April, when he called to congratulate me on being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. I hear he is busy writing movie scripts, TV treatments, etc for a variety of projects he is involved with, in the film and TV business, none of which has anything to do with wrestling. Paul is a brilliant guy who has many skills and will not surprise me if he writes some major “hits†before all is said and done. Happy Heyman has a vivid imagination to say the least.
James- I hope the “new†Hart Foundation works really well if and when it is debuted. I am just an old school guy who is leery of repackaged characterizations but this one might work. Time will tell and I am certainly pulling for the “Hart†kids.
Michael- When I last saw Magnum T.A., aka Terry Allen, he had some interest in mentoring and coaching some of the young wrestlers, who the WWE is grooming. Terry is a great student of the game and has an excellent knowledge of the business and would probably make an excellent voice for the youngsters to hear in the training camps. I have not heard the upshot of this matter, but hope all works out for Magnum who got his big break in Mid South Wrestling.
JJ- The first ever ladder tag team matches in the WWE were unique and amazing in my estimation. I was not prepared as a broadcaster for what I was about to see. The chances the teams took were scary, but damn sure exciting. The Hardys along with Edge and Christian were big time when it came to “ladder moments.†Those four make any subsequent ladder matches hard to follow, but I do always seem to enjoy the Money in the Bank Ladder Matches at Wrestlemania.
Bob- The Sooners have many miles to travel before we can start talking about a 8th National Title. Obviously LSU and Florida may damage each other during SEC play while even though Southern Cal doesn’t have a conference title game their conference foes may derail the Trojans, but that is a stretch as far as I am concerned. I look for USC to be in the BCS Title game but against who is the question. I know OU would love to play any one there and we fans would relish another shot at USC or at LSU back in the Superdome, where OU lost a game they should have won against the Tigers, for the National Title not that long ago. Bottom line is that there is a ton of great college football to be played and the ever present Big 12 South schedule looms large for OU, including the Texas Longhorns in Dallas on October 6.
Roy- Happy 25th anniversary to you and the Mrs. and it was great seeing you in our place on Tuesday night. I hope you saved room for the desert we sent over and we look forward to seeing you back again soon. Here’s to 25 more years of happiness!!
Mike- Many things are changing in the WWE for the better, in my view, as it relates to their much discussed Wellness Program. Lots of people can take responsibility for issues involving the program and I think they are. Wrestlers need to make better personal decisions and their doctors need to be smarter and not be so willing to cheat or be so gullible. That’s my personal opinion. The WWE is seemingly of the mindset that if a wrestler can’t adhere to the rules, the wrestler will unfortunately be looking elsewhere for work. From my experience in the management arm of the WWE, one of the bigger issues that the company has to deal with is the wrestlers denying when they have issues. Having a problem is not a mortal sin and humans do make mistakes. The bigger issue is when these mortal men and women refuse to admit they have a problem and continue to look for ways to “beat the system†that is designed to help them live healthier lives. Bottom line is that some talents simply will never adhere to the rules of any system that they are in and my personal philosophy in management was if one could not solve a problem, no matter how hard one tried, then the only alternative one had was to eliminate the problem. Sounds harsh, but that is the way I see it.
Curtis- IF, and that’s a big IF, I were a playable character in the Raw vs. Smackdown 08 video game, what would my finishing maneuver be? Something painless to execute like striking someone with a rib bone or squirting some J.R.’s Bar-B-Q Sauce in their eyes. Seriously, it is best to keep old J.R. out of the ring and I can’t honestly say I have ever enjoyed being placed in that role over the years. I just feel I am under qualified, under trained and under talented athletically at this stage of my life to represent the business the way it should be done. I am still excited about this version of the video game and encourage all “gamers†and WWE fans to check it out.
Ed- I don’t think Barry Windham being “in shape†has any thing to do with Barry not wrestling anymore these days. As I under stand it BW has a bad back and doesn’t need to be bouncing around any longer. A remake of the Four Horsemen without Ric Flair and Arn Anderson would never cut it to my way of thinking.
J.R.'s Cookbook Our Bar-B-Q biz is just amazing and Mrs. J.R. and yours truly are very thankful and appreciative. Our store in Norman is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. unless the Sooners play a night game and then we stay open later. The sale of our Sauces, Merchandise and Beef Jerky on this website continues to grow and we thank you! I hope you will consider buying one of our cookbooks and we will autograph it for you. Now is a good time to be thinking about holiday gift ideas and we have plenty in our online store.
BOOMER SOONER!
