John Cena has not just been a babyface for years in WWE, but he’s been the ultimate babyface. It’s been a long time since his “Doctor of Thugonomics” days and when he was able to pull off being the heel. For a long time though, it’s been thought that WWE may end up trying to have him turn on the fans once again, but never would. Now, a John Cena heel turn may be coming soon and it’s all because merchandise sales have been low.

Currently, John Cena is on the shelf due to having shoulder surgery and he’s currently rehabbing, but it’s about 95 percent certain to keep him out of WrestleMania 32. That doesn’t mean that WWE is taking a break on coming up with plans for him though.

Forbes is reporting that a number of ideas are being tossed around for when Cena does return to the ring in a few months, and one of them is a major change for the hero of WWE. Could the company finally pull the trigger and turn John Cena heel?

For years and years, WWE was never going to turn Cena heel because of two main reasons.

His incredible work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation
His merchandise sales always being so incredibly high

Now, WWE has had to deal with some sagging television ratings in recent months and merchandise sales aren’t at an all-time high for him. There’s a good reason for that though, and it’s with the emergence of other big-time babyfaces within the company.

Roman Reigns is now being accepted. Dean Ambrose is way over with the fans. Brock Lesnar can do no wrong. AJ Styles is on the scene, and he was already over, but casual fans are learning of him too. The Lucha Dragons, The New Day, and countless others are selling merchandise.

With all of those merchandise sales going strong, there are also a number of big-time babyfaces in that group. That helps in trying to have another savior and face for WWE if they wanted to make the big heel turn that so many have wanted for so long.

John Cena already gets seriously mixed crowd reactions wherever he goes, and in some places, he’s booed out of the building. Making him a heel would not only give his character a fresh new coat of paint, but could breathe new life into the WWE main roster.

"The heel turn of John Cena would immediately be a huge angle that would honestly be along the lines of one of the biggest turns in wrestling history. Anyone that has watched wrestling knows of the infamous Hulk Hogan heel turn at Bash at the Beach 1996 when the nWo was formed.

Not only did the wrestling world get a boost from this shocking heel turn, but it started the “Monday Night Wars.” It also began one of the biggest and most popular eras in wrestling that has ever existed throughout time.

Wrestling Rumors is reporting that John Cena’s merchandise sales being down is coming from the wrestler getting older and his fans doing the same. It means they are buying less and some children are latching onto other popular wrestlers too.

Stepping away from the ring and the TV cameras, John Cena could still successfully do his Make-A-Wish work even if he turned heel on camera. It wouldn’t hurt him at all because he’s still a great person out of character.

The drop in his merchandise sales though…that is helping the WWE’s decision to do something that has been rumored for a very long time and it is to turn John Cena heel. It could make for great TV and would instantly boost ratings because it would not just be a change, but it would be something totally and drastically different."

TLDR : It is all rumors but based on sales dropping on merch, Roman getting a push, lack of good ratings... now (this year) would be the time if they were going to turn Cena, to turn him heel.

Perhaps Cena could turn heel in time for WM 33 so that they do the whole passing of the torch deal with Reigns.

They may as well cause I think at this point, John Cena is starting to be forgotten by his kid fan base.

Cena turning heel as of now makes perfect sense. But let him do it right when he comes back. Let reigns vs cena happen at summerslam this year. Heel cena vs face reigns would draw insane ratings.

Cena is going to hit a point, which seems to be happening now, where people aren't as interested and guys like reigns and Ambrose as well as Brock, will beat him in sales. That's when you pull the pin and make cena a badass, awesome heel, which he could easily do.

It would be epic honestly.

I would love to see heel Cena come back. That white trash ghetto thug tossing kids for a pay check.

Heel Cena vs. Face Reigns sounds amazing.

According to the man himself, he's been ready for a heel turn since 2011-2012. He even had new music and merch done. He was in the midst of planning, when it was all scraped.

Yup, during the rock feud he was gonna be heel but they decided to do the face vs face.

They'll just screw up the Cena heel turn like they do with most other things. They'd book Reigns vs Cena at Summerslam, have Cena align himself with The Authority because god knows a corporate heel champion is a fresh concept that hasn't already been done several times the last few years, and then they'll use him to eventually put over Reigns even further, despite the fact that Roman will probably be no more popular by then than he is now.

Or maybe that's just the pessimistic in me talking.
And with a heel Cena, all the smarks will cheer for him and the crowd will still be 50/50.

Yup. The only way that won't happen is if what I wrote above happens and he becomes The Authority's champion and remains mostly the same insufferable, dull corporate-friendly personality he is now except that he plays dirty and talks about how little he cares about the people who support him (even the kids!), as boring as that would be at this point. But if his character became more edgy and more of a "bad-ass", then he'll almost certainly be loved, since that's the kind of character that the people who boo him want him to be.

To be honest, it would be well worth it anyway. He could do like Hollywood Rock did and mock those that still choose to support him, especially since a good lot of them would be the same ones that hated him for years, and if he was booked against foes that were equally popular (or more), then he'd still get enough boos to matter.

Normally I'd agree that WWE would screw up a heel turn, but in this case I think it'd be really hard to screw up a cena heel turn. They'll give him mic time and let him have a little free reign and the fans will make and be suspense for a while no matter what they do.

This.

Cena is great on the mic and he is one of their most protected assets. They would not allow anything to screw it up and John himself wouldn't be the one to screw himself either... lol... He was a heel before so I am sure he knows what to do.

It's the best thing they could do for him. It's the only way he will win the hardcore wrestling fans back somewhat. I don't think I've seen a longer run as a proposed face in the business and it's definitely done him more harm than good. Everybody needs to change at some point, it's the nature of the business! Even Stone Cold had to do it....I look forward to seeing it anyway, bring it on.
