OSSIPEE, N.H. -- A massive police search was under way Thursday for an escaped prisoner from the Carroll County House of Corrections in Ossipee, according to local police.
The police chief in neighboring Tamworth said every available police unit, including police from Ossipee, Tamworth, Effingham, Freedom and state police, were responding.
The prisoner was identified as David Glenn Hobson, 33. Officials said he was believed to be wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. He was being held while awaiting trial for a burglary offense. Investigators said Hobson was in the jail yard during his 30-minute recreation time when he ran away.
"He went out over a perimeter fence. It was somewhat of a bold escape because that fence has razor ribbon on it," Carroll County Sheriff Christopher Conley said. "We have an indication that there was some injury going over the fence."
Police consider Hobson to be dangerous.
Officials said Hobson is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. He has hazel eyes and blond or strawberry blond hair.
Police had three search dogs at the scene, and the state police helicopter was called in. The dogs were tracking the prisoner through a wooded area in Ossipee, headed toward Route 28, the chief said.
"At this point, we believe he probably made it to a vehicle, or certainly to the road. But it's a heavily-wooded section. This complex sits on 1,000 acres, and there's various terrain. There's a lot of marsh and wet areas," Conley said.
Police said Hobson apparently used clothing to protect himself from the jail's perimeter razor wire, but he apparently cut himself significantly.
Maine State Police and the York County Sheriff's Department in Maine have joined the search for Hobson. He is from Alfred, Maine in York County and according to Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland they believe he may try to return to Maine.
