The Lucha Brothers may be leaving AEW.

Bryan Alvarez is reporting that the internal belief within AEW is that both Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix would be leaving the company for WWE when their contracts expire. This comes after WrestlePurists reported earlier on Monday that the two were expected to leave, and a Trios Championship match that had been set for All In involving the duo has since been changed.

LuchaLibreonline reported back in June that Penta’s contract was set to expire between August and September of this year, and there was interest within WWE in bringing him in. Fightful reported last week that Fenix’s contract was also coming up this year.

Oh wow. With the Lucha Bros and MCMG potentially coming in, Hunter could definitely freshen up his tag division

Seemed like there might be something to it with the recent trademarks. Even if WWE wants to let them who knows the naming situation since it's one of the weirdest in wrestling rn, Fenix had to wrestle in CMLL as "King" and Penta as "Lucha Bro" lol

No issue with them getting a big bag b4 retiring. They always injured or having visa issues and from the booking side aew doesn't seem interested in pushing them as a tag team or singles guys anymore (likely due to them never staying healthy)

Both wwe and aew needs to get their tag divisions going badly, 2024 has been ass for tag wrestling in general. Hopefully moves like this shake up bookers enough to make more of an effort

Yeah doesn't feel like as big of a blow then leaving as it should bc they've been a big part of the history. I'm more excited to see what they do with a change of scenery than anything

The luchador market could be about to welcome two new free agents, but they might not be free agents for long. According to a report from WrestlePurists, AEW's Lucha Brothers are not expected to renew their contracts when they expire. As for Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo's next destination, there is an overwhelming belief within AEW that the two luchadors are WWE-bound.

WrestlingPurists' Ibou broke the news on their post-SummerSlam livestream and included details about the Lucha Brothers' immediate plans, especially in regards to AEW's upcoming All In pay-per-view. The Lucha Brothers were slated for a match alongside fellow Death Triangle member PAC against The Patriarchy for the World Trios Championship at Wembley Stadium. However, according to WrestlePurists, that plan has since been scrapped following news of the Lucha Brothers' intentions to leave the company; the plan now is reportedly to run a triple threat trios title match involving The Patriarchy, the Bang Bang Gang, and House of Black. This match has yet to be announced in any official capacity, but the three teams have been feuding on AEW programming.

"When the [All In] match got canceled, I asked around internally ... multiple sources within AEW told me, basically made it clear to me, that the Lucha Brothers are expected to depart AEW at the end of their contract," Ibou said. "Some of them speculated that WWE was the destination, others outright said to me that it was a formality."

Previous reports have indicated WWE has interest in Penta, whose contract is expected to expire within the next two months. While there have been no reports of WWE's interest towards Fenix, it's been speculated that Fenix's injury caused his AEW contract to be extended, and that WWE would sign both Fenix and Penta as a unit.

I know it should be considered a rumor considering the source, but still

Yea if this was 3 years ago I'd be devastated but Fenix is constantly gone and they've booked penta as a break glass stand in. Feels like the juice has been fully squeezed for them in this territory. N tbh its not even a bad thing, this is the good side of a duopoly

And tbh I agreed with penta when he said he was bummed at his usage. I also understand why aew doesn't seem that hype on him solo(top heavy roster)

It's also interesting that despite that and probably knowing he was going to entertain WWE for awhile, he still cut off AAA entirely to try and get CMLL to let him be on Forbidden Door and work Arena Mexico. He seems to have very specific goals whatever they are

Penta esp prob will fit in well because he's been really just hitting his spots n taunts every match n not really innovating or going nuts (from my pov). So wwe style prob gonna fit him well

I'll miss them a lot if they go and I don't have faith in WWE booking them well with the tag division on main being what it is and dragon lee doing nothing at all
