I was just thinking about something... Surprised It's never crossed my mind before. But here it is:
Do you think WWE planned Undertaker's streak back when he debuted? By that, do you think they decided they would have this guy undefeated at Mania, right from the start? That seems unlikely to me. So I'm wondering when they finally decided that was the route they were gonna go... It can't just be coincidence that he's never lost. So at what point do you think it was decided that they would let The Undertaker have a Wrestlemania undefeated streak?

Honest to God, no bullshit, I just thought about this yesterday. I'd like to know the answer to this. I think there were honestly times when Vince didn't know how to keep him in the WWE, let alone have him highlight his own spot on a WM card every year he's able to compete.

I think it may not have been planned until he got to about 5 or 6 victories, then they added it up and realized what they'd done so far.

I think that what they thought of is the following.
As its Wrestlemania, then making Taker win would be the best choice for that PPV. So he was winning everytime he had a WM match.
From that, it summed up to a point that they started talking about a possible long term streak for him.

I think it was from wrestlemania 11 onwards dunno why. I was trying to think when they started mentioning it. Im sure they noticed he had won like 5-0 and thought hang on we could take this somewhere. Good thread mike.

So the rumour goes, he was meant to face Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania 8... Can't recall if there was ever a finish to go along with that rumour, but ya gotta figure if Warrior was still 'behaving himself'(*) then, being old skool 'Mania, the uber-face would have gone over....

Maybe a streak wouldn't have even got off of the ground?

I honestly don't think it was planned at all. As said, I'm sure they realized a few Manias in that he had been winning every year. I don't think they started actually recognizing it until about his 10th win or so. I'm sure it was just a coincidence they decided to run with.

First time I can recall hearing of the streak was around WM18.

I do not think it was really evident until Wrestlemania 13. I mean his first few victories he had at Mania weren't exactly highlights of the card. I dont think it was until after then the wwe thought they could do something with it. I do not remember hearing to much about it other then from my stat obsessed uncle untill around Wrestlemania X7 when he faced Trips. I think that if he would have went at it with Warrior at Mania 8 the "streak" would not have ever began and the Undertaker would not be as big of a WWE mainstay has he been the last 10 years.

i was actually gonna say that. i get back to hearing king screaming "TEN N 0! HE'S TEN N 0!" every time i wanna count his streak.

i doubt they had it planned for him anytime before the war with wcw ended.

Yeah, I'm going with the theory Airfixx, and TDK, and most people here had. They must've just started out with him, and not relaised he was undefeated until several years in, probably 9 or 10 wins in, and then realised they could make a storyline out of it, and now don't want to break it.
On a side note, Edge was 5-0 at Mania until WM23. They should've kept his going, and had him eventually end the streak, or at leats have an epic battle at WM26, at which time Edge would've been 8-0. That would've been a sick way to build a match, but they had to ruin it by having him lose MITB (which is also ironic, cause he ended up winning that same breifcase from Kennedy later in the year)...

WM 13 would had him at 6-0.... Now 'maybe' it's just my memory, but I've NEVER heard anything mentioned before 10-0.

1. WM7
2. WM8
3. WM9
4. WM11
5. WM12
6. WM13
7. WM14
8. WM15
9. WM17
10. WM18

Well that is true but imo that was first first really important victory in the streak.

I believe they did mention it at WM 13, but like saying "Taker has never lost at Wrestlemania" without actually playing it off as a Streak.

i just think it was accendental lol McMahon was like "geezz he's like already 7-0 leave him undefeated" :D but really i dont think WWE really planed to make him undefeated when he first started probly around his first 6-8 wins they decided to In my opinion.

Could it have been used to maybe keep him from going back to WCW when he was already an established, talented big guy?
