MMAMANIA:

Right now, I've talked to Joe Silva quite a few times and we're looking at maybe January. He has told me it's going to be Matt Serra, so I'm looking at January or February. That'll give my knee plenty of time to heal, if [it heals] natural. If I have to go under the knife, I don't know what my time frame will be but we'll see. Right now we're looking like January.

Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes talks about a knee injury that he sustained in his loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85: Bedlam back in June, as well as his looming showdown with Matt Serra tentatively set for January. Serra and Hughes, who are about as opposite as two people can get, were opposing coaches in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 and were supposed to fight at UFC 79: Nemesis in December 2007. However, Serra had to withdraw because of a serious back injury. The pair have been yapping about getting in the Octagon together for more than a year, expect more of the same until this thing is settled.

That would be something that people want to see. It's a great rivalry.

If there's anything left for Matt Hughes it's Serra. Hughes hasn't been himself lately. If he wins he has another shot at something big. Serra can afford to let one go. It sounds like Hughes knows that.

First off, i think that this would be a great fight, but it definately can't headline a card. And whoever looses this fight would be in big trouble with their career.

Yea, sure it will settle a score, but whoever loses is basically done in UFC. If Serra beats Hughes, Hughes will look like a chump and be on a losing streak, not knowing if he will ever make it back to title contention. If Hughes beats Serra, it will make Serra look like a one hit wonder winning the title and losing it in his first title defense. That will shoot Serra down and crush his spirits.
