When you make a good thread, comment, joke, etc.. People will give you reputation for it.

I'm not the guy who makes the best threads or long stories (cool stories), still got a decent rating.

Find the thing (subject) your good at, discuss it, make threads, and that thing will grow.

Basically the more active you are, the more recognised you will be in the community. Good posts and activity basically help you receive rep, but people normally give it for the sake of it (see my page lol).
