A SUN SPORT EXCLUSIVE!

PAUL HEYMAN REVEALS HOW VINCE McMAHON
WANTED TO FIRE ALL THE ECW ORIGINALS,
AND THE MOVIE CHARACTER THAT INSPIRED
THE "TOMMY DREAMER" CHARACTER

The Former ECW Owner Won't Congratulate His Former
Protege On Winning The ECW Title ... But Praises Dreamer
For Something He Says Is Far More Important In WWE!

Paul Heyman has posted a new blog exclusively on THE SUN (UK) and The Mad Scientist writes extensively on the fact Tommy Dreamer is now the ECW Champion. Paul E also reveals a never-before-disclosed fact that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon wanted to legitimately fire Dreamer and the rest of the ECW Originals (except for Sabu and Rob Van Dam) in 2006.

Heyman revealed:
While many members of the creative team, like Ed Koskey and David Lagana, actually grew into wrestling fanatics cheering in the bleacher section of the ECW Arena during the 1990s, Vince McMahon just didn't understand the character.
"Paul," the Chairman of the entire industry would say, "what exactly IS a Tommy Dreamer? I don't get it!"
This was never more apparent than a few weeks into the re-birth of ECW as a television property in 2006, when Vince had an epiphany.
Kill off the originals. All of 'em. Well, we'll keep Sabu and Rob Van Dam, but the first week after Big Show won the ECW title, Vince wanted the newly-minted "Heel Heyman" to come out on television and publicly fire Sandman, Balls Mahoney, Little Guido, Francine, Al Snow and especially Tommy Dreamer.
Vince declared: "Time to let people know that concept is dead, and so are those guys, one and all."
With help from Talent Exec John Laurinaitis, and even a surprisingly impassioned endorsement from Stephanie McMahon-LeVesque, I was able to persuade Vince to keep the originals on board, and not because the brand needed the Bingo Hall alumnae, but because there was actual value in those talented performers.
While the firings, which were going to include the real life behind the scenes "best wishes in all you future endeavors" notice given to Dreamer and company were averted, Vince's lack of belief in Dreamer continued.
Heyman also reveals why he won't congratulate Dreamer on winning the title,
but for a victory far more important behind the scenes in WWE. Heyman also
reveals which great movie character the "Tommy Dreamer" persona is based on.

A fascinating read, exclusively here:

He sounds more and more bitter everytime he talks. Look, even IF Vince truly just wanted the ECW name, whats the big deal with that? Are you telling me Sandman and Tommy Dreamer were going to be able to 1. have the matches they had 10 years ago, and 2. live up to what guys like Punk, Morrison, and Lashley did for ECW? Riiiiiiiiiiight. The WWE is Vince's territory, and hes gonna run it how he wants. If you dont like it Paul, you're the mad genius, come back and stick it up his ass.

...The entire point he's making flew right by you didn't it?

Wasnt given a proper chance to do it ECW style. Like it was first proposed.

Vince didnt have to give it a chance. He saw the ratings it drew on Spike, he saw that the ECW Originals were growing old, why should he trott out Sandman vs. Mikey Whipwreck when the WWE had young talent to showcase, of whom, Morrison and Punk, were/are a lot better than a lot of those ECW Alums at least in the ring. Vince would have been smart to keep some of them around to give the younger guys a rub and teach them backstage. But Supercrazy vs. Nunzio for the millionth time would have been blah.
