With UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit's announcement that he would wait for currently injured Welterweight Champ, Georges St. Pierre, rather than defend the Interim Belt, the 170 lb. weight division is once again clogged up at the top.Instead, fans hoping for a matchup between "Bigg Rigg" Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit will have to wait and see who comes out on top when the Canadian St. Pierre returns from an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

For Hendricks, who has his sights set on the title and more specifically St. Pierre, waiting around to see the outcome of an unannounced fight is not an option.

"I would love to wait (for St. Pierre)," shared Hendricks. "But what if Carlos Condit beats him and it's a close fight? Then all of a sudden they get a rematch. That might be five or six months later… and all of a sudden, I'm out for eight months."

The hypothetical scenario described above by the two-time collegiate wrestling champion out of Oklahoma State University is not farfetched, as MMA fans have witnessed several rematches for the title in the UFC's sharktank of a division at 155 lbs.

Rather than wait and risk the ring rust, Hendricks expects to fight another contender to keep his spot as the man to vie for the 170 lb. strap after St. Pierre and Condit meet at a date to be determined.

"If there's somebody out there that they think is Number 2, like I am, then I'll have to fight them."

I say Ellenberger is way ahead of Hendricks in the WW division. That would be a great fight though, Hendricks/Ellenberger or even Hendricks/Kampmann for the number one contenders spot.
