STOUGHTON, Mass. -- Police say someone vandalized a family’s home -- that was built for them and their son with special needs by Habitat for Humanity -- and stole thousands of dollars worth of construction supplies.

“The whole door frame was just all over the floor -- the wood -- everything was cracked, and I was just like, ‘Oh no,’†said Erin Daxberger.

In an instant, Daxberger knew thieves struck what is soon to be her family’s new home.

“This home is, it’s a gift,†said Daxberger.

The gift was made possible by the family’s hard work and Habitat for Humanity. The home was specifically designed by volunteers to accommodate Daxberger’s 4-year-old son, who has muscular dystrophy.

“All the doors in the house have been widened to accommodate the wheelchair, so yes, it isn’t just a standard off the shelf door. If it was, we have some in our warehouse, we’d go get it,†said Martine Taylor of South Shore Habitat for Humanity.

Thousands of dollars worth of tools were also stolen.

“We basically lost our compressors, our nail guns, finish guns, screw guns…†said Taylor.

“The first reciprocating saw I’ve ever used was taken,†said Daxberger. “And I know it’s silly, but it’s a big deal for me.â€

In the basement alongside well wishes from volunteers, they found that the home was also vandalized.

“They just basically took a paint can, dumped it over, spilled it out -- we’re in the process of still cleaning here,†said Taylor.

One thing they didn’t steal was Daxberger’s spirit. She is ready to get back to working alongside the volunteers. She just wants them to get their tools back.

“There’s so much love put into this house, this is not going to dampen it even a little bit,†said Daxberger. “It’s our home. We might not live in it yet, but it’s our home.â€

The family was hoping to get the key to their new home for the New Year, but now it has been delayed. No move in date has been set.
