Do gimmick characters work, for new guys to the WWE (or repackaged guys)?

Look at a lot of the guys who've come through the WWE, and how many of them with gimmicks, from Umaga types to the Spirit Squad, have truly lasted? Then look at guys like Dibiase and Rhodes, and what they're doing at the moment.

At some point or not, the guys who are given the gimmicks, like the SS or DJ Gabriel, are going to become very annoying, and will never be seen as WHC/WWE Champion material. They just won't, so what's the point of putting that gimmick on them?

I know it adds flavour to the brand, but in the long run WWE will not be able to use them, and it's really just wasting a talent for a few weeks/months.

What's your outlook on gimmick'ed wrestlers, do you think they're worth the time and effort?

Yes - Umaga is an exception, lol.

Gimmicks that are serious- yes.
Guys liek DJ Gabriel, and stuff of that sort, are set up for failure from the start. There needs to be gimmicks in wrestling. You always need the occasional monster character, like an Umaga, and you sometimes need an unrealistic gimmick like Taker and Kane, and aside from that, you still need gimmicks, just a little more realistic. Guys like Jericho, Edge, Triple H (heel), Orton, and in the past, Rock, Austin, Hogan, etc, are the types of gimmicks you need. Just amplified versions of real types of people. Cheesy gimmicks aren't needed, and are a waste of time. But you can't have a bunch of guys come out there with no personality. You need to find a balance. You need, like I said, gimmicks that are "turned up versions of real people". But there's also always a need for Umaga/Kane type characters as well, if they're not overdone.

MVP & Kofi are both recent guys that made their gimmicks work straight from their company debut.

Some gimmicks work, some don't - It's as simple as that.... Some workers can get a crap gimmick over, some can't.

I must admit, I do think a lot of the half-assed gimmicks they come up with for debutees are a bit pointless though... I mean, surely a guy like Gabriel or whoever would stand a better chance of getting over as a CAW-like guy than as some lame happy dancer type (for example).
