Gable Steveson will not be competing at the 2023 Senior World Championships later this month.

Steveson has informed USA Wrestling that he is withdrawing from the competition. He had qualified for the event by defeating Mason Parris at Final X in June. Parris will now replace Steveson in the tournament, which takes place in Belgrade, Serbia from September 16 to 24.

It's not clear what led to Steveson withdrawing from the event. The 23-year-old returned to amateur wrestling in April at the 2023 US Open Wrestling Championships. He outscored his opponents 44-1 and went 4-0 in the competition. There have also been rumors that Steveson intends to use his final year of eligibility and return to NCAA competition.

A report from FloWrestling in June states Steveson was hoping to return to the college ranks with WWE's blessing.

Flowrestling wrote:

Steveson still has to sort out scheduling details with the WWE before his return is official, but if all goes according to plan, he will be back on the NCAA mat next season.
Steveson wrestled his first official WWE match earlier this summer when he went to a double countout with Baron Corbin at NXT Great American Bash on July 30.

Gable Steveson officially withdrew from the 2023 World Championships in a surprising move.

Steveson, who had been previously reported requiring WWE's permission to compete at the World Championships due to his contractual obligations, has now been confirmed as "officially removed from the NXT roster" according to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The withdrawal was certainly abrupt. Meltzer delved deeper into the situation situation, noting, "The official story is that he has decided not to compete. Mason Parris, who Steveson dominated in the national championships and beat two more times in the team trials will represent the U.S. in the 275-pound weight class. This is one week after amateur wrestling sites had reported he was in.”

Meltzer also pointed out the peculiar nature of this development, especially considering Steveson's recent successes. "It is a really weird story because there was no point in him competing in the tournament and wrestle-offs if not to compete in the world championships. But at the end of the day, this was a WWE decision as he's under contract to them."

The lack of clarity surrounding Steveson's withdrawal, particularly in the absence of any reported injury, has left many puzzled. "One would think this would indicate WWE not allowing Steveson to go for his third NCAA title next year nor the 2024 Olympics, but ultimately this is a decision up to the company," Meltzer remarked.

There are also some questions regarding his status in NXT. Meltzer stated, "there are no plans for him in NXT at this moment."

Steveson, who has hinted at a potential appearance in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, had recently made a triumphant return to freestyle wrestling by winning the 2023 U.S. Open and securing a spot on the 2023 U.S. Senior World Team at Final X in Newark, New Jersey, marking his first foray back into the sport since the Olympic Games.

The Corbin thing never made sense as he was always supposed to be leaving and prepping for Olympics. If he's prepping for Olympics why withdrawl from World Championships? I bet he pissed dirty at WWE or something they said ok you can go quietly sit on your but and we won't report it to World Championshps.

Corbin should use that as bragging rights in character that he retired two Olympic gold medalists.

I mean last time Chad had a rivalry with Corbin, he got renamed Shorty G. So that alone should have Chad passing on the match lol

On Friday night, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson had the second match of his professional wrestling career.

Steveson faced Dante Chen at Friday's NXT house show in Sebring, Florida . A fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) described it as a "pretty back-and-forth match" where Steveson won with an ankle lock.

Our "Filthy" Tom Lawlor said on Friday's episode of Wrestling Observer Live that he had sources in the amateur wrestling world who told him that they expected Steveson to be on the house show in Sebring.

Steveson was originally scheduled to compete in the 2023 Senior World Championships in Serbia later this month, but he withdrew from the event this week. It's not clear what the withdrawal means for Steveson's amateur wrestling future.

After winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics, Steveson signed a multi-year deal with WWE in September 2021. He made several appearances for WWE after that but didn't debut in the ring until facing Baron Corbin at NXT Great American Bash this July. The match was six minutes long and ended in a double countout.
