Though he may not have had the "Answer" to the puzzle that is Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson, Frankie Edgar appears to have finally formulated a response to the question of what the future holds for his career.
For much of his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) campaign, the undersized Edgar has been encouraged and rumored to make the move down to 145 pounds. Despite the constant rumors and criticism, Edgar has been largely opposed to the idea, stating that 155 pounds is where he feels comfortable, preferring to not have to make a big weight cut if he doesn't have to.
That's about to change.
On FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight," Ariel Helwani revealed that he had spoken to Edgar and that the Toms River, N.J., native shared his plans to finally make the 10-pound drop to Featherweight once and for all thanks in large part to his inability to overcome the judges scorecards in his loss to "Smooth" at UFC 150 earlier this month.
During the report, Helwani revealed that Edgar hopes to make his debut some time around December of this year (2012), though an opponent has not been named. Edgar also stated that, although a fight with current featherweight champion Jose Aldo is not on the immediate horizon, "Scarface's" recent comments in the press have lit a fire under him, and he looks forward to a future face off at some point in time.
All signs point to Edgar having to earn his way up to the top for a title shot, yet his move down is certainly a welcome injection of talent into what may be the UFC's most shallow division from a talent perspective.
Somewhere, UFC President Dana White is smiling, ear-to-ear, knowing that Edgar won't be killing light weight contenders, but rather working toward a championship showdown with his smallest Brazilian champion.
Honestly it's the best decision the guy can make. Both he and Clay Guida are pretty nice additions to that division. Even if i don't like Edgar there's no doubt he's talented.
Would like to see him fight Cody McKenzie or something.
