A father who went to confront the alleged rapist of his teenage daughter was shot and killed Thursday when he kicked open the door of the man’s apartment.Ricky Sanders, 41, died Thursday afternoon at Miami Valley Hospital. William Wayne Anthony, 56, is in the Montgomery County Jail awaiting his initial court appearance where he faces possible felony rape charges, police said.
During the course of the investigation of the Thursday morning shooting, detectives uncovered the alleged rape, said Sgt. Larry Tolpin, head of the special victims unit. The daughter, who split her time between the home of her mother and the home of her father and stepmother, ran away late Tuesday or early Wednesday from her mother’s home to spend the night with an older female friend, Tolpin said.
The older friend introduced the daughter to Anthony, who allegedly raped the teenager at his apartment in the Upper Deck Apartments, 17 N. Decker Ave., Tolpin said. When the teenager returned Thursday morning to her mother’s home, she was met by her mother, father and stepmother.
“During the conversation, she disclosed what happened,†Tolpin said Friday. “The father became enraged and demanded his daughter show him the location where it had occurred.â€
Taking his daughter and her stepmother with him, Sanders drove to the apartment building. An armed Sanders and his wife then entered the building, went to the second-floor apartment and knocked on the door. Anthony opened the door and upon seeing an armed stranger, slammed the door and armed himself, Tolpin said.
Sanders then kicked open the door and took a step or two into the apartment where Anthony fired two or three shots, hitting Sanders. Sanders stumbled down the stairs and out the building before collapsing in an alley. When police arrived just before 11:30 a.m., a passer-by was administering CPR to Sanders.
A semiautomatic pistol lay in the alley next to his body.
Police took Anthony, his wife and witnesses into custody for questioning before arresting Anthony shortly after 7 p.m. in connection with the alleged rape. The daughter was taken to an area hospital, where evidence was collected.
Lt. Mark Martin, head of the central investigations unit, said no one has yet been arrested in the shooting. He said Thursday that self-defense is one of the many possible motives in the shooting.
