Extreme Championship Wrestling, I have to say, was once my favourite promotion in the world of wrestling…. I personally believe ECW put the attitude era into wrestling which certainly benefited WWF and WCW through the ‘ Monday Night Wars ’ that went on for many years…. I thought long and hard of what sort of BTB I should do. WCW jumped into my head as I was also a fan of that, WWF and WWE as imagined also jumped into my head and I was sure it would be a WWE BTB I would do but finally I came to my decision to do a BTB on what I loved and what I loved was ECW!!!
Extreme Championship Wrestling 2001
Extreme Championship Wrestling, the wrestling promotion that changed the wrestling world for good, the wrestling promotion that showed organisations like the WWF, like WCW how to go all out and be Hardcore… ECW known as the promotion that brought the ‘ Attitude Era ’ into professional wrestling…. It cannot be argued that Extreme Championship Wrestling had their good times, some which were very good but it also cannot be argued that Extreme Championship Wrestling had their bad times, some very bad times finally forcing ECW to closure
Anyway… Eastern Championship Wrestling as it was known until Shane Douglas after winning the NWA World Championship placed it into the bin and announced himself as the first E CW Champion…. Eastern Championship Wrestling before this was formed by Todd Gordon in Philadelphia ….. Like said before this was the case until Shane Douglas changed it
Paul Heyman… also known as ECW came in as head booker in the year of 1995... He had a totally different look on wrestling than what Mr McMahon, Eric Bischoff, Vince Russo did… Paul Heyman seen an extreme side of wrestling, a so called ‘ Dark Side ’ of wrestling that had never been let out before but it was soon to be….
For years and years after Paul Heyman became head booker and the name was changed to Extreme! ECW quickly became the third brand in wrestling behind WCW and the WWF who were going threw the Monday night wars at this time… ECW in not a lot of time had moved from a small independent wrestling promotion to like said before, knowing as the third best wrestling promotion but the thing that was stopping ECW from taking that next level was the lack of finances, resources and many different things….. This wasn’t noticeable at first as for the first time ever in April 1997, this month brought ECWs first ever pay-per-view, Barely Legal….. ECW looked like they weren’t looking back from this point but sadly this was not the case….
With the hot demand of superstars as WWF and WCW were desperately trying to bring in more talent to gain momentum over their rivals, this saw ECW lose out on so many rising stars, the stars that maybe could have took ECW to the next level… who was to know? ECW roster just got weaker and weaker from their on… Paul Heymans skills of producing stars to top ECW what he had done in the past with, the likes off, The Dudley Boys, Tazz and all of the other young stars…. The ECW Roster was now incredibly weak and with lack of sources, ECW were clearly not in the state to go out and offer high wages to big time talent…..Storylines were tried which saw ECW invade WWF…. And other storylines…..
With attendances to the weekly show and the popularity of the promotion at an all-time high it seemed that nothing could be done and nothing would help the ever falling ECW…. As ECW approached 2001, they were at a low if we are talking about the depth In talent of the roster, the availability of money but surprisingly if you are talking about popularity ECW was up their with the best of them especially after the ending of WCW v WWF Monday night wards….. In January 2001, the big names in ECW read stars like Tommy Dreamer, Rhyno and Rob Van Dam…. This was a huge drop from where ECW used to be with talent such as Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerreo, Rey Mysterio JR and so many, many more great talent…
Extreme Championship Wrestling was finally ended due to bankruptcy, this was announced by the man, people say made it what it was, Paul Heyman… maybe the hardest announcement he had ever had to make and the hardest one Extremists round the world had to hear…. WWE now use ECW as a brand but it is nowhere near what it was back in the day!
Was ECW finally over?, was the wrestling company that brought Extreme to the wrestling world finally over? Was the company that brought the Attitude era to the world of professional wrestling finally over….. Well IRL it was but people, this ain’t real life….. So here we go, I leave you to wonder what happened from now on and you are about to find out
After the announcement of the ending of ECW, Paul Heyman who was head booker of ECW began working non-stop to get ECW back …. With financial problems, it was made clear that he would need a financial backer or someone that can help money wise in ECW….. After weeks of working to get ECW back, it was finally done, a financial backer was put in place and ECW looked like they were back but how long for? ECW would live on through 2001 and Paul Heyman would be hoping for more time afterwards, Another thing that was letting ECW down was due to the lack of trust in ECW from TV companies, ECW were stuck with Syndicated TV Shows…. Would ECW live on?
