Tonight millions of people across the world will be switching off all their electricity for one hour. Yes, ALL of it.

Everyone will be switching off their lights, computers, televisions, iPads, chargers and any other electronic devices that may be lurking in their homes for 60 minutes at 8.30pm tonight for Earth Hour.

That means you will miss this tonight…

And instead you will need one of these:

Or you could even try this:

But it’s okay, because even the Queen is taking part.

She’ll be switching off the lights at Buckingham Palace and Boris Johnson is turning the lights out at the Gherkin.

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament will also be sent into darkness, as will the Royal Albert Hall.

And it’s all because every year several million tonnes of waste is produced.

We drink our coffee out of cardboard cups, eat with plastic forks, chuck away our leftover food, leave our iPhones charging overnight.

In Britain alone we throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes and office blocks keep their lights on 24/7.

So the WWF started Earth Hour in Sydney in 2007 – a time when we can think about our waste and keep it in check for the rest of the year.

Rachel Bloodworth, head of public engagement at WWF-UK said:

Earth Hour is a great way for people from all over the world to come together and do something that will have a positive effect on our planet for future generations.

From crowdfunding to campaigns to protect The Great Barrier Reef or The Amazon, Earth Hour is having a real and lasting impact.

We can all take small steps to live a more sustainable lifestyle and that begins with taking part in Earth Hour.

Doing your bit for the planet has never been so fun. So sign up and be part of it.

Last year 9 million people in the UK took part and 85% said they felt inspired to go on living more sustainably beyond the hour. Let’s grow that this year.

You’ll be needing one of these….

Sure why not.. drink some beer, have some herbal substance and read some magazines or comics or a book for an hour, not hard.. also me having gone out the past 3 nights may have something to do with my decision to stay in.

WWF started Earth Hour? That's the most creative name for a PPV they came up with for a while.

I never knew turning off lights will save the earth. Coal plants will be bustling, and factories will be pumping - lights on or off. The Earth is screwed.

No. The Earth will be fine. The only reason people "Care about Earth" is because they are selfish and want the Earth to be best habitable for them.

Earth will be here long after our sorry asses are instinct
