NEW YORK - Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.

After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members.

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."

Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy."

"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."

Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority."

Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.

Okay...I'm not a fan of Harry Potter and I don't even like it. And this is one more reason to hate the Harry Potter series...but why would there be a gay character in a fucking kids book?

Yeah, why would you want somebody kids might admire being gay? Not that's wrong but why intentionally do it?

I'm not going to comment on what I think of the Harry Potter series, since it's irrelevant, but the fact that you said you have another reason to hate it because a character is gay is just flat out pathetic. Why does it matter? It's not like there are explicit man-man sex scenes in the book.

...Who cares? Are kids not going to witness gay people throughout life? Plus, if Rowling hadn't said anything no one would know that he was gay in the first place so what does it matter? Now, I don't even like the HP books either for my own reasons, but a character in the book being gay certainly wouldn't be a factor.

In the book, reading it you would never think that he's gay. It's only when you really consider it deeply that such a possibilty will come out. In fact, I'll congratulate her. Who else would dare make a hundred plus year old wizard gay?

^^^lol..........very true....doesn't really matter that Dumbledore is gay....the truth is that reading the books you could never tell so a 8-12 yr old won't be able to tell either......so as said before it doesn't matter plus Dumbledore is a pretty cool character after all

Whe I first had heard that the author said he was gay, I lmao. My neice and I read the Harry Potter books and have seen all the movies so far as well, and I can honestly say, never once did it occur to me to wonder, or even care, whether or not Dumbledore liked men or women. I'm not going to freak out over it, because bottom line, it's a book, and I'm sure all of the HP fans could care less, especially now that the series is over.

Well it was written in the subtext of the last book and I had wondered, but it doesn't matter anyway. And why use a gay character in a kids book? Maybe to teach tolerence to children, which some of you so clearly do not have. Unlike some of you seem to think gay people do exist, and if children were taught this from a younger age it might actually save a lot of people being prejudiced against for something so small and irrelevant as their sexual orientation.

Good for Dumbledore.

I've read them, and there's nothing that really says he's gay. So it's weird that she came out and said he was gay after the 7th book came out.

^^^well alot of it had to do with the fact that the director of "Half Blood Prince" wanted to give Dumbledore a long lost G/F so she had to tell him no
