Drew McIntyre's WWE contract set to expire this year

Drew McIntyre's WWE contract is in its final year with both sides reportedly not close to a new deal.

PWInsider first reported the specifics Friday with Dave Meltzer confirming on last night's Wrestling Observer Radio.

It was noted that McIntyre's contract isn't up imminently so there is time for both sides to come to an agreement if they want to move forward.

McIntyre is set to challenge for the WWE Intercontinental title against the champion Gunther and Sheamus in a three-way on Sunday's WrestleMania 39 card.

McIntyre returned to WWE in 2017 after a multi-year indie run where he rebuilt his image and character following his 2014 WWE release. Since returning, he won the WWE title twice with his second run ending in February 2021. His stints were all during the height of the pandemic when he was a main focus.

He notably headlined last September's Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales, against undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

He's also a former WWE NXT Champion, WWE Intercontinental Champion and two-time WWE Raw Tag Team Champion.

Wouldn't be surprised if he wants a lighter schedule, not a part time one but slightly reduced. Feels like there's been quite a lot of reports the past year or so about him being banged up, working hurt etc.

Like others have said. I don't see him going anywhere. But, I'm not sure if they'd give him a lighter schedule. Can't start having that be "a thing". And I don't think, at least I don't consider him, to be on the level of attraction like Brock.

I didn't say he should but I would probably consider it considering it doesn't matter if he's face or heel, Roman is the ceiling and no will ever be allowed to be on that level.

Prob stays for the money but anyone with actual aspirations of being world champ gotta be wondering what the plan here.

Same with Jay White, why would you sign when Roman is heel champ and Theory is US champ and Gunther is IC champ. He's a super heel with no title feuds and he will never get the chance to be a top heel with all the champs being heel.

I mean if I'm Drew I'd be pretty disappointed with my return honestly. Only title run was with nobody in seats. After that midcard for the majority of the time without any real meaningful storylines.

Not saying AEW is a better option for him cause I kind of see the same situation over there too. I go back to two belts on one person being the big problem in WWE.
