Rey Mysterio's been wrestling since the early 90s. The only one that could have come close to being the Mysterio replacement was Kalisto and they just never pushed the trigger on that one.

They tried. They put the US title on him I think twice. He just never caught on.

Obviously they tried with Sin Cara and even Del Rio. None of them were Rey

Well Del Rio wasnt a high flyer and when he debuted he was a heel. His english also wasnt the best either so that didnt help him either. Sin Cara on the other hand, when he was there, apparenly he was a major merch pusher because of his mask.

I can see Lee being Rey’s new buddy and that get under Escobar’s skin and the lWo minus Carlito and maybe Zelina turn on Rey and Lee and Lee v Escobar becomes a feud for years

Santos/Del Toro/Wilde (Legado Del Fantasma) vs. Rey/Carlito/Lee (the LWO) would be a good 6-man feud. immediately coming out of the breakup. Then Lee/Escobar becomes the long-term feud and Rey/Carlito tag for a while.
