Hey everybody! Alex here with a new UFC discussion topic. Like I said, feel free to participate even if you yourself don't watch or pay attention to MMA.
After defeating Chael Sonnen this Saturday with complete ease, Jon Jones has tied Tito Ortiz's record for most Light heavyweight title defenses and will easily go down as greatest fighter to ever grace the octagon at 205 all at the tender age of 25. Now that he has pretty much done everything he can at that weight class, Jones has three directions as to what he could do next; defend his title one more time and break the record of Light heavyweight title defenses, move up to Heavyweight and test his luck at that weight class, or take a possiple superfight with Anderson Silva.
Unfortunately at this point, I don't believe there is enough viable competition for Jones to really defend his title because he has pretty much cleaned up the division. I believe the best thing for him to do is to take a fight at heavyweight until the UFC can come up with more competitors.. Gustafsson fits the description and Glover Teixeira is also an up and comer capable of making a good fight, but I don't see either of them having the formula to beat the champ.
A superfight with Anderson Silva would only make sense if the UFC can book a big enough arena that'll draw, I heard Dana White saying something about Cowboy Stadium to do a possiple superfight with Georges St-Pierre but I think everybody knows my take on that. Jones is a much better match up for him and that would generate great revenue for not only the UFC but for the state of Texas as well.
But in the meantime, I think Jones should build up his legacy a little bit more before he takes on Silva and I personally think a fight at Heavyweight would be the best thing for him to do than after a couple of title defenses take on Silva. Two opponents that come to mind at Heavyweight are Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub, I think either one would be a good introduction matchup for him.
Well WP, what's your take on the issue?
