As a ten year old at the time I was totally hooked on the Rick Martel-Jake Roberts feud and their blindfold match at Mania 7th.

No doubt the feud was built perfectly, but did the gimmick of the match hamper the two men and the enjoyment and flow of the match? I am going to stick up for it as both sold it to perfection, and because it was unique concept at the time. Also, the pop when Jake got the win was awesome!

Thoughts? Classic gimmick bout or bad idea?

Bad idea, but it had a good basis and I think they executed it as well as the could have. Blindfold matches are just horrible and even the best wrestlers are going to have a hard time with it. The basis behind the match was there though and the gimmick definitely worked with the feud. If Russo was around yet we probably would have gotten a "Perfume on a Pole" match and tbh, that probably would have been better.

If a guy blinds you, I shouldn't be laughing at his revenge match.

Wasn't the story that Roberts was still blind though but he didn't want to wait? That would make more sense but I don't know if they said he was healed by 'Mania or not.

I'm not sure, I think Jake was blind in one eye and wore a contact lense that made on eye look like it was rolled into the back of his head.....but I'm just going by memory, I could be way off. I was five at the time.

Just remember me and my family laughing hysterically at these two dopes in hoods, gingerly walking around with their hands waving arounds and doing comedic spots. It's just a match that screams comedy and is hard to take serious, no matter what the angle was going into it.

Why not a dog collar match? Or a leather strap match? Both could've made sure the blinded Jake would know where his opponent was and could beat the fuck out of the guy who blinded him with gimmicks that look like it hurts.
