Devon was on Monday Night Mayhem to discuss a variety of topics. Below is a recap.
BRING. HIM. BACK. :hogan:
- Devon’s contract expired on August 28th. He was in the process of negotiating a new deal with TNA, but both sides could not agree on the terms before the deadline. He clarified that he has no hard feelings towards TNA. He is a devout Christian and he’ll go wherever God wants him to go next.
- Devon doesn’t know anything about the status of the Television Championship. TNA has not made a decision yet about what to do with the title and he obviously cannot return without a contract.
- Devon said he still wants to wrestle, so he is open to the idea of going to WWE, ROH or overseas to Japan. He blasted the dirtsheet writers and the internet fans who criticized TNA for splitting up Team 3D when it was actually his and Bubba’s decision to break off into singles. He believes the critics were so negative about the idea because it didn’t work in the WWE in 2002. He encouraged the naysayers to continue doubting them because it motivates them to succeed even more.
- Devon said he is grateful to Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff for giving him the opportunity to showcase his skills as a singles competitor. He was touched by Hogan’s recent Twitter comments as well as the fans chanting his name even when he’s not on the show. He said it’s a great feeling to have so many people behind him, and he just started running with it in terms of his singles push. He regrets not being able to reach a new deal with TNA before the deadline, but he would consider returning to the company if Hogan can pull some strings and work something out.
- Devon said he enjoys the responsibility of working with the younger guys and helping them grow. He recalled when the Motor City Machine Guns approached Team 3D for advice, and they told them that all they have to do to get over with the crowd is to tell a good story without killing themselves in the ring - it’s all about longevity. Alex Shelley (before he left TNA) pulled Devon aside one night and thanked him for the advice on how to work smarter. Devon also mentioned how he tried to take Robbie E, Robbie T and Garett Bischoff under his wing when they got a chance to work together a few months ago.
- Devon said he still maintains a good relationship with Bully Ray. They don’t like to talk about business with each other because their contract negotiations were handled separately. Once they split as a tag team in 2010, it opened the door for them to completely become their own individuals. Neither guy felt strange about going in different directions. Ray took advantage of his opportunity to become one of the top heels in TNA, while Devon decided to go away for a while to get in the best shape possible and eventually work his way up the ladder. While Devon appeared periodically on television during the storyline with the Pope, it wasn’t until he won the TV Title from Robbie E that he felt 100% ready to go as a singles competitor.
- Devon spoke fondly about working with Beer Money and the Motor City Machine Guns during their tag team days. Devon is a huge fan of Bobby Roode and always felt that Roode was destined for greatness back in 2005-06. Team 3D had great chemistry with Beer Money whether they played the babyfaces or heels. The Guns also provided an interesting challenge because of their fast-paced X Division style.
- Devon said he always wanted to work with Kurt Angle one-on-one. He also pinpointed the Road Warriors, Harlem Heat and the Outsiders as his top 3 tag team dream matches.
- Devon recalled when he had a hard time playing the Reverend Devon character in the WWE because he tried to memorize his script. Stone Cold Steve Austin gave him some valuable advice to keep bullet points in his head and speak in the words of the character as opposed to the way it is written word-for-word by the writers. Devon believes that most wrestlers have a hard time mastering their mic skills because they’re not allowed to cut their promos freely without a script. He emphasized that each wrestler has to fully understand their own character in order to get that character over to the audience.
- Devon said he has never ruled out a return to the WWE at some point in his career. He doesn’t know if that will happen in the near future, but he’s just going to relax for now and spend some time with his family.
- Devon said he hasn’t necessarily entertained the thought of Team 3D being inducted into the WWE or TNA Hall of Fame as neither guy is planning to retire anytime soon.
- Devon said he is currently in the best shape of his life. He also gave credit to Bully Ray for doing the same once they went their separate ways.
- Devon wrapped things up by plugging the Team 3D Academy and his charity called “Hope for Single Moms”.
