The man in the picture above - his name is Robert Pera. If you aren't a fan of the NBA, then it isn't surprising that you haven't heard of him. [I knew I hadn't before I put together this backstory]. Anyway, Pera is the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies and an extremely rich man - and when I say rich I mean he is a legitimate billionaire and is also the youngest owner of an NBA team in North America. So - putting it bluntly he has a lot of money and also seems to very good at spending it. Well in this cooked up reality, Robert Pera has decided that he wants to go down the same road as other young enterprising businessmen have gone by investing some money in the world of professional wrestling.

Being based in Memphis - his first considering was to bring a previous promotion from the city back to life and at one point bringing back the Continental Wrestling Association had been a plan on the drawing board, but it was later decided that he didn't want to be seen as someone trying to dig up the past. However, Pera was aware that simply creating a brand and an identity for a wrestling company was an extremely difficult task. So he scoured the internet until he found a company he felt he could work - a company that had previously been based in the United Kingdom from 2016-2019 - having been rebranded halfway through it life before finally becoming defunct. Pera felt that the intellectual property associated with this promotion would be incredibly marketable in the US - and also with his financial backing had the potential to become a global brand if it was nurtured properly. And he would reveal the new promotion at Defiant Wrestling.

Pera would announce that Defiant would work out of Memphis to begin with - with the home location for the location being the Memphis Pyramid with an agreement having being made with its current owners Bass Pro Shops. Pera would make it clear that to begin with, Defiant would host monthly show with the first show booked to take place on the first weekend of April. It would be made clear - that a press conference would be held with further details about this premier show of the new promotion. At the first press conference a singles match would be booked between Bu Ku Dao and Eli Isom, whilst CMLL's Magnus and Star, Jr. were set to team up against The Colony (Worker Ant II & Fire Ant) with the biggest news being the announcement that Johnny Swinger would contest for the Defiant Internet Championship against a yet to be found opponent at the April event.

Defiant Wrestling - April Event Press Conference #1 - 18/02/2021

Defiant Wrestling would host their first Press Conference as part of the build towards their debut show that was scheduled to take place during the first weekend of April. Pera would make it clear that because the promotion was working on a monthly model, they currently didn’t see themselves as direct competition to anyone else in the market but at the same time wanted to make it clear that eventually the hope was for the promotion to transition to hosting weekly shows whether this was done through a television spot or through a streaming platform. Pera would make it clear that he had been in talks with a number of workers from a number of different promotions - as well those personnel who were in positions of power to form good working relationships and potential long term alliances in the future. Pera would then make the announcement of the first match that had been officially been booked to take place - at the still yet to be named debut event. This would lead to Bu Ku Dao and Eli Isom coming out onto the stage.

Bu Ku Dao vs. Eli Isom

Pera would make it clear that both men were highly talented young prospects still very much in the early stages of their careers and had the potential to reach the highest heights in the industry if they were given enough chances to prove themselves and that he felt that Defiant Wrestling could become of these platforms for both men. As both men were given the opportunity to speak, Bu Ku Dao would make it clear that he had recently started to get a spot with Major League Wrestling but that he welcomed any chance to show his talent to a live audience. Isom on the other hand would make it clear that the most important thing on his mind was claiming a victory and if Dao was the man standing in his way then he was going to push himself to claim an important victory at the debut Defiant Wrestling event. Both men would then shake hands on the stage, before a photo opportunity would take place with Rober Pera before the two wrestlers would retreat backstage.

Pera would then announce that a second match had been added to the card, but unfortunately because of other work commitments none of the four men were available as he would announce that a partnership of two wrestlers working for CMLL would team up together:

Magnus & Star, Jr.

And that they would face two members of ‘The Colony’ Fire Ant and Worker Ant with none of the members of the group having been seen since they retreated back to the Ant Hill after the shutdown of Chikara.

Worker Ant II & Fire Ant Ant

Robert Pera would announce that the winning team would be given an invitation to return at the second event, although the date of this event was yet to be confirmed. The presser would end with Robert Pera revealing one last man that was scheduled to take in the debut event as being none other than Johnny Swinger.

Johnny Swinger

Swinger would reveal that he had worked in the wrestling business for over two decades, but that Robert Pera had signed up to wrestle a minimum of six events for Defiant Wrestling. Swinger would announce that as part of the deal he had been guaranteed a shot for the Defiant Internet Championship at the April event, but as of yet an opponent had yet to be found. Swinger would then (assumedly with Pera’s blessing) issue an open challenge to anyone in the wrestling business to face him in a one-on-one match at the Defiant Wrestling debut event. This would then lead to the press conference coming to a conclusion.

Defiant Wrestling - Online Update #1 - 20/02/2021

Defiant Wrestling's website would be updated by their online content manager, with announcements of a number of matches being added to the still yet to be named debut event that would be taking place during the first weekend in April. The first match that had been announced would be the first match involving women as Filipino Gisele Shaw who had been trained at the Storm Wrestling Academy was being pitted up against Zan Phoenix who was mostly know for her work in the United Kingdom with Revolution Pro Wrestling.

A partnership was announced between Defiant Wrestling and Mexican promotion Lucha Libre Worldwide AAA - which seemed to indicate that AAA and that CMLL didn't seem to mind having talent from both promotions feature on the same billing. It would be made clear that at some point a Triple A title match would feature as part of a future Defiant Wrestling event. The match added to the debut event would see El Hijo de Fantasma take on Australian Suicide - in what was being billed as one of the headline matches for the event.

As of yet - an opponent to face Johnny Swinger for the Defiant Wrestling Internet Championship had yet to be announced. Currently Defiant Wrestling had booked four matches to take place as part of their premier April event.

Defiant Wrestling - Online Update #2 - 01/03/2021

Defiant Wrestling's website would be updated by their online content manager once again with a further two matches being added to the card. The first match would involve a man who hadn't wrestled since 2017 - none other than B.J. Whitmer who was currently employed by All Elite Wrestling as one of their trainers. It wasn't clear whether this meant that Whitmer was looking to make a more permanent return or whether this would be the sign of future links with AEW. Whitmer's opponent would be New Japan's Satoshi Kojima.

The second announced match would also be revealed as the seventh and final match on the April Show card - although an opponent for Johnny Swinger still hadn't been announced. The match would however be a very unique inter-gender singles match that would see Ring of Honor's incredibly unique Danhausen set to face against Nikki Krampus with the two unique character sure enough to put a unique showing at Defiant Wrestling's premier event.

Confirmation of the date for the April event would now be confirmed as being Saturday April 3rd - with the prior knowledge that until anything else was announced at the Memphis Pyramid. More importantly the first show's name would also be revealed as 'Rise Up' and confirm partnerships with AAA: Lucha Libra Worldwide as well as Bass Pro Shops who were the owners of the Memphis Pyramid. The update would end by showing an official promotional poster being used for the event.
