Cormier told Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo that he "jacked" the hand on the first punch that connected on Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva last Saturday night. After a visit to the doctor, the two-time Olympic wrestler tweeted confirmation that the hand is broken, and the injury will put him on the shelf for "a while."
USA Today, citing Cormier's management team, Zinkin Enertainment, reports that Cormier will resume training in six to eight weeks if all goes well. That would put Cormier's timetable to return to the gym sometime in late October or early November.
Cormier entered the tournament as a replacement for Alistair Overeem, who was removed due to injuries and contract issues. The win over Silva put him into the finals against Josh Barnett, who defeated Sergei Kharitonov by arm triangle in Saturday's main event. No date has been set for the tournament finale, though it is expected to take place early in 2012.
