BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- During the recent multi-agency operation that targeted the criminal activities of the East Side Crips and those who supply guns and drugs to gang members, the Bakersfield Police Department arrested a detentions deputy for possession for sale of an assault rifle and selling a firearm without a license to do so.
In August, Michael Gordon May, 28, sold an SKS rifle and ammunition to an undercover operator/gang member, Sgt. Mary DeGeare said.
May was arrested leaving his home on Nov. 3 after a year-long investigation. May was employed as a detentions deputy for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.
Due to the ongoing investigation, his arrest was not made public at that time and it was thought he would be identified at the culmination of the operation, DeGeare said.
DeGeare said May’s charges were initially thought to meet federal guidelines but do not. Therefore after review by the Kern County district attorney's office, was charged with unlawful transfer of a firearm, which is a misdemeanor.
