ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Superintendent Winston Brooks said the APS officer, who handcuffed an elementary school student to restrain him, acted inappropriately.

The officer has temporarily had her sheriff's commission revoked and has been placed on paid administrative leave while the district investigates.

On Monday, an autistic student, 7, at Mary Ann Binford Elementary School on the southwest mesa began acting up, even trying to run away from the school. According to the APS police report, the student was trying to kick and punch school officials as they tried to calm him down.

An APS officer then handcuffed the special education student to a chair for fifteen minutes until the boy's mother arrived.Brooks said the officer crossed the line.

"I believe this is an isolated incident," said Brooks. "It's very unfortunate. It shouldn't have happened, and the officer that did this will be disciplined."

Brooks said district officials should always try calling parents first and that restraining a child should be the last resort.

According to the report, school officials tried to make contact with the boy's parents for more than an hour and a half before his mom came to pick him up.
