A cook at a Bronzeville neighborhood barbecue restaurant was shot and killed while taking a cigarette break, police said this morning.
Joshua Hudgins, 34, appeared to have been hit by a bullet meant for someone else, police said.
The shooting happened at about 9 p.m. outside Alice's Bar-B-Que at 65 E. 43rd St., police said.
Hudgins, of the 4900 block of South Champlain Avenue, had gone outside for a cigarette break when someone inside a passing light-colored vehicle opened fire, striking the man in the chest, police said.
It appeared the gunman was aiming at someone else standing nearby but missed, hitting Hudgins instead, police said.
He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Police hadn't made any arrests in the shooting. Employees at the South Side business couldn't be reached for comment this morning.
