Cody Rhodes says WWE doesn't need The Rock at WrestleMania 39.

At one time, Rock was rumored to be headlining this year's event against Roman Reigns. However, Triple H revealed at the post-Royal Rumble media event that Rock returning at Mania this year is simply "not in the cards."

Rhodes doesn't believe WWE needs The Rock for the show. During an interview with the Daily Mail published Monday, he said that storylines happening with WWE's current roster are more appealing than bringing back The Great One.

Rhodes said:

With all the respect in the world to one of the GOATs, The Rock, it looks like the options we have here within the roster are even better because of the stories that are happening.

He continued to use the Sami Zayn/Bloodline angle and his story of wanting to win the title his father couldn't as examples.

One story about finishing something that started in 1978 - seven years before I was even born - and another story of really the tragedy of being welcomed into the Bloodline and then what you saw unfolds.
Rhodes also addressed Sami Zayn's popularity and if there are any concerns about the Bloodline angle running parallel to his WWE title chase.

I love that you bring it up that these stories are running parallel, I think sometimes wrestling fans think it's got to be one or it's got to be the other, whereas I subscribe - and I'm not in charge - I subscribe to give them everything.
Rhodes entered the men's Royal Rumble match at #30 and eliminated Gunther last to win. Provided Reigns retains over Zayn in Montreal, he'll defend his title against Rhodes at WrestleMania.

I get what he is saying but man it's a bit of a stretch to paint cody vs roman as a better story than roman vs rock.

I mean painting it in the context of finishing a goal from 1978 is a great argument. But also who says we couldn't have had both? Roman beats the Rock night one he's unstoppable truely nobody can beat him, Night 2 Cody wins. Even better imo

With all due respect, I disagree with him. Cody's story could have been told with anybody as the champion but it just so happens that Roman is holding the belts.

Rock/Roman was just perfect with all the family ties, the head of the table stuff, Roman's unstoppable reign etc. Would have been fucking huge.

Only rasslin fans who go all "they don't make new stars anymore"....say they need a retired guy in his 50s to headline their big show, when you have TWO candidates who are hot right now.

Never change :heston

Only ONE of those candidates isn't already considered widely considered a star so out of the 3 possible candidates none of them are really making stars, the bigger star maker would be having The rock win and then someone pinning him, that'd make anyone a star.

Cody Rhodes has walked back previous comments he made about The Rock.

Earlier this month, Rhodes spoke with The Daily Mail about The Great One potentially taking part in WrestleMania 39. He said, "With all the respect in the world to one of the GOATs, The Rock, it looks like the options we have here within the roster are even better because of the stories that are happening."

However, the 2023 men's Royal Rumble winner spoke with Sports Illustrated recently and clarified his earlier comments.

Rhodes said:

I said it in a pretty nice way but I said 'hey, all respect to the Rock, I like what we have.' But I'm going to walk that one back and I"m going to say if the Rock decides to come to WrestleMania, please. Simply because we're able to have WrestleMania because of someone like The Rock and Rock was able to have WrestleMania because of somebody like Hogan, and because of the Dustys, and the Flairs, and the Pipers.
I hope I didn't talk out of turn there because I absolutely adore The Rock and would love it if he was present in any setting. His family is massively important to what we do and if Rock decides to show up at WrestleMania, Hollywood would love that. I will say if Rock doesn't come to WrestleMania, we have an unbelievable card if not the best ever, at the biggest ever, in terms of the financials, the gates, two days in Hollywood so it's a win-win.

The Rock has made several public statements praising Rhodes in recent years. He posted to Twitter that he was proud of both Seth Rollins and Rhodes following their Hell in a Cell match last year when Rhodes wrestled with a torn pec.

Rock also publicly complimented Rhodes for a promo he delivered in AEW back in September 2019.

Smart decision, this was articulated better than his first attempt.
