HARRISON TWP., Montgomery Co. (WDTN) - The clerk of a Harrison Township pawn shop who was shot during a robbery attempt Thursday morning has died.
Investigators told 2 NEWS three men and a woman tried to rob the Cash To Go Pawn Shop in the 3600 block of Salem Avenue around 9:30.
The clerk and the robbers exchanged gunfire and the clerk was struck multiple times. He was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital where he later died.
"He was a real nice guy," says Byron Moses who had been in the shop before. "He'd try to help you out as much as he could with anything."
The suspects escaped in a gold and green Pontiac van with Michigan plates CDM 3662.
The shootout shattered the shop's glass door and some of the bullets even hit the Labor Works building across the street. Deputies tell 2 NEWS it's fortunate no one else was hit by the gunfire on what is a busy stretch of Salem Avenue.
In light of what happened, we asked deputies about whether clerks should be armed.
"He's in his business and that's a business decision they make," says Major David Hale with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. "It's legal to do that."
The victim's name has not been released.
