Chan Sung Jung to UFC winner Cub Swanson: 'Fight me'
Cub Swanson recently told MMAjunkie he doesn’t necessarily want to wait for a title shot if it means another extended layoff. If true, at least one fellow contender is interested in a matchup.
Following Swanson’s “Fight of the Night†win over Jeremy Stephens in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 44 headliner, recent title challenger Chan Sung Jung (13-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had a simple message: He wants to fight Swanson (21-5 MMA, 6-1 UFC).
As he wrote on Twitter:
Chan Sung Jung ✔ @KoreanZombieMMA
@CubSwanson Fight me.
In the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA featherweight rankings, Swanson is ranked No. 3, and Jung is No. 8. Meanwhile, reigning champion and No. 1 Jose Aldo (24-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) meets No. 2 Chad Mendes (16-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) in August at UFC 176.
With six straight wins, including back-to-back “Fight of the Night performances, Swanson’s title resume is about as strong as they come. However, during his in-cage interview, he said he wasn’t going to beg for a title shot, and after the event, he said he’s simply happy to be in his current position.
However, should Aldo and Mendes force an immediate rematch – or should a potential title shot be delayed – Swanson, who returned from an 11-month layoff in Saturday’s FOX Sports 1-televised headliner, could certainly solidify his title case with a win over Jung. The Korean hasn’t fought since August, when he suffered a freak shoulder injury in a title loss to Aldo.
