We all know no one will ever catch Bruno Sammartino's record for consecutive days holding the belt. My question is: could there any chance that WWE will push someone to hold the belt as long as Hogan held it? (4 years). Or is it impossible given the impatience of people in this day and age?

Unless wrestling died out completely but was then revived and started all over again (and even then, I'm not sure), this will never happen. We live in a faster paced era, with weekly shows, monthly PPVs, etc. People would become too bored if someone even kept the belt for two years, much less four or more.

No, I don't think it will ever happen again..

The days of long reigns are over, we are so lucky to witness THE BEST IN THE WORLD holding the title for 434 days now... :punk:

I don't think all hope is lost. If this is happening with Punk, who's to say 10-15 years down the road there won't be someone who can do the same or better? Someone with the charisma of the Rock, with the in ring ability of Bret Hart, and the look of Hulk Hogan. Highly unlikely, but I wouldn't say impossible.

The problem with long title reigns that go on for years is that there is only so many people you can face, and so you end up beating the same people, over and over. And then you repeat the process over and over again with new wrestlers that come up. This wasn't as big of a problem in the old days, because feuds back then (in the Hogan era) would go for several months to a year, much longer than they do now. But nowadays it is. Just look at all the people CM Punk has feuded with in the past year - Del Rio, Miz, Ziggler, Jericho, Bryan, Kane, Cena, Ryback, and soon, The Rock. Could you imagine him constantly running through the whole roster for another three years?

I personally don't want someone to keep it for four years. I have no problem with Punk's reign though, because it hasn't been ridiculously long and drawn out for me just yet.

It will never happen again, but if there is some miracle that I am wrong, the superstar holding the belt better be the most entertaining thing on tv period. I think Austin could have been someone who could do it, but he had The Rock who was almost as equal in popularity IMO. I just don't see WWE being successful and letting someone hold the belt for that long.

What they have to do is stop the monthly PPVs. It's not 1998 anymore. Building a match for 4 months instead of sometimes 2-3 weeks is not enough. Feuds get blown off way too soon. If they cut back to 4 then the possibility of this happening becomes much higher.

Fuck we agree again.... I personally think 8 would be great 2months build each to RR, WM, SS and SVS allows them to feel special whilst allowing for the shorter attention span of a modern audience.

That would be great, they should also bring back King Of The Ring...

Very much doubt it as modern day attention spans are short an seem to get shorter.

Won't happen, back in the territory days we had much less shows, which is why guys like Sammartino and Backlund held the title for so long. Unless a guy was a transitional champion, the reigns would last for a long time. These days, with three main shows per week plus monthly PPVs we see to much of the guy, it'd get stale.
