For his candor, fighting prowess and spirit, the mercurial Stocktonian has become MMA fans' favorite anti-hero. As a result, since he abruptly announced his retirement following a controversial decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 earlier this year, his absence from the scene has been felt.
Fans of the 209 should keep their heads up though, as Diaz's longtime trainer/manager, Cesar Gracie, has no intention of letting the supremely talented 29-year-old hang up his gloves. Speaking during a recent appearance on Sherdog Radio Network's Beatdown show, Gracie declared himself devoted to ensuring Nick Diaz fights again.
He's pretty relaxed actually. He's not stressed out about anything. I was with him last night. He did a few rounds boxing. Nick's a martial artist. He's always in some kind of training. It drives him crazy not to be. He's always doing jiu-jitsu. He's always doing a little something. Mentally, he's doing great right now.
He's sick of the politics, the whole marijuana thing, the judges … It's kind of a weird thing, but let's face it: I'm not going to let that guy quit. I just don't see that happening. He's too good and he's too important in this sport, I think. If it's up to me, there's no way that's going to happen.
After vacating his Strikeforce title to rejoin the ranks of the UFC, Diaz beat down BJ Penn and then lost a very close unanimous decision to Carlos Condit for the UFC interim welterweight title.
Understandable to be pissed off at the things Nick is pissed at. I'm a fan of The Diaz Brothers, they're the most unique people in all of MMA and I'd love for Nick to continue his career. So this is all good news really.
