CES 2009: Vuzix's VR Sunglasses
The Wrap 920AV from Vuzix looks to change the way we look at the world, literally.

January 5, 2009 - One of the products we're a little anxious to take a look at on the CES showroom this year is the Wrap 920AV eyewear from Vuzix. In mid-December we were given a very short preview of the high-tech sunglasses (which can be read here.), which promised great things in the world of Virtual and Augmented reality. With the official unveil just days away, we've gotten our hands on some more details and specs behind what could be one of our favorite gadgets for 2009.
For those that don't know, the Wrap 920AV is a pair of sunglass-style video eyewear that feature see-thru Quantum optics. The Wrap 920AV will give users access to virtual, augmented and mixed reality environments. For typical media viewing when attached to any media playing device, the glasses project a virtual 60-inch screen as viewed from 9-feet, which is amazing but also might make your jaywalking experience across the street a little more dangerous than usual.
Other than acting as a face mounted display for movie and TV viewing, the technology will also allow users to view 3D video content while seeing and interacting with the real world. The goal is to blend real and computer generated content in an effort to revolutionize the world of portable video.
"The Wrap 920AV will not just change the portable video industry, but how consumers view and interact with information," said Vuzix CEO Paul Travers. "From watching a Civil War video reproduction battle reenactment on the actual battleground to walking through the streets of New York City with an animated virtual tour guide, the possibilities are endless," added Travers.
Just some of the additional features of the Wrap 920AV includes the ability to work with 2D and 3D video formats, twin high-resolution AMLCD displays, high-quality noise-isolating comfort fit earphones, on-screen display control, and even the ability to have prescription lens inserts installed for those that wear eyeglasses. The unit runs on two AA batteries, which will provide about 6 hours of battery life. The device was designed to be compatible with practically any device, including all iPod/iPhone models that have video output, video cameras, video game consoles, digital cameras, and DVD players.
Collectively as a group here at IGN Gear, we've yet to experience a virtual reality experience worth writing home about, but these glasses have us legitimately excited. Stay tuned to IGN for more updates from CES and the Wrap 920AV glasses.
