The WWE landscape was shocked to hear that their number one draw, their one year champion, the man capable of creating his own era, John Cena, was injured after a failed hip toss and would be out for 6-8 months, even that time has been extended in some reports to a full year.

A few days ago, we witness that the one getting the spot as a champion was none other than Randy Orton.

That brings me to my point. Back when Evolution started, Randy Orton was seen as the next big star, the guy that WWE would depend on, that solidify when he obtained the IC title, carrying for months getting one of the longest reigns in years, then feuding legend, and getting a clean pin at WM, Mick Foley. Only to then culminate with becoming the youngest World Champion in history. Yeah, it was certainly seeing that WWE was stablishing Orton as their franchise guy, but what happens, he gets buried, right from Unforgiven straight to the Royal Rumble by HHH, ending his franchise guy run and possibilities.

Rewind for a second, John Cena getting the US title from Big Show at WM. Yeah, he was probably seen as the future, but you really have to ask yourself, did he really was being book from the beginning as a guy that could be what he is today? No, the answer is simply, no, he wasn't being booked that strong, and certainly not as strong as Orton. But now go forward, right when Orton ends being buried, who starts getting pushed toward real Main Event, John Cena, tying the RR with Batista.

Now advance to 2007, with Cena being the monster he is, with submission victories over the likes of Edge, HHH, HBK, Chris Benoit, The Great Khali, even put there Umaga as he passed out to a reforced with the top rope STFU. And see Orton, WWE has to spend an entire year to build up as a proper contender a former future franchise guy. That's how weak he was.

Cena gets injured. And it has never been a secret that Vince saw in Orton first than in Cena their go to guy. Nowadays Cena is WWE, but do you see Randy Orton removing Cena as the top star. I mean, John is out for an entire year, and Randy is supposely slated for a long reign and a monster push, so basicaly do you see Randy Orton replacing John Cena as the Number One Draw, Number One competitor in the WWE.

Randy Orton will never be the #1 guy that Cena is, because say all you want about the news exaggertaing things, but the #1 guy has to be the consummate professional. Cena might not be a great wrestler, but he's hardworking, doesn't mind throwing in extra hours at work, and no reports of discipline problems. Orton on the other hand, have countless suspensions. he's just a transitional champ.

As for who's the next number one, I guess it's too early to say.

Good read and I agree with a lot of your points. I love Orton and have for quite sometime hes the best heel in the WWE right now imo. That being said I just can't see him replacing Cena for the #1 spot. The way things are these days you pretty much have to be a face to be that #1 guy because all the little kids will hate you if you aren't. I don't see Randy turing face any time soon and he definitely shouldn't. As much as I love Orton and wish he would take over I'm pretty damn sure that once Cena returns it'll be Monday Night Cena again. I really don't hate Cena, I just hated him being champion for soo long, I think if he would turn heel and chase the belt once he comes back he would be pretty BA and I would actually probably cheer for him. However, that will never happen so...

nah i cant see Orton replacing cena for the no1 IMO as stated above he is a transitional champ and i don't think he will hold the title for that long and as said above cena is hardworking good role model randy is an ass and for most of the time in trouble outside the ring. plus i think the whole reason HBK came back early is because cena got injured and he will be the big face and will at some point from Nov/Jan time HBK will take the title off him and run with it for a few months till he loses it at wm24

Orton will NOT replace Cena, no one will for that matter. Hell, look at the belt, it might not spin anymore, but its still Cena's belt (His design). Is a subtle way of saying, he's still the champ.... He just doesn't have the belt.

Chris Benoit

I'm sorry, who?
