In aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital: It is totally free to attend and is already being called the biggest British Wrestling show in over a decade and many insiders believe that the “BritWres-Fest 2012†event in London on April 1st may just be what the indust...ry needs to catapult itself back into the mainstream once again.
British Wrestling was a staple part of British culture, with a mainstream TV presence onITV’s Saturday afternoon “World of Sportâ€, for an astounding and uninterrupted 33 years. Sadly in 1988, and despite the outcry of millions of viewers nationwide, then Head of Programming Greg Dyke, made the unpopular decision to axe it. As a result British wrestling slowly crumbled, making our shores easy pickings for the top promoters on the American circuit. The American’s now have a multimillion dollar business loop in a country that once held its home-grown industry as a national institution, which was even watched by the Royal Family. Much to the anger of UK wrestlers and promoters, the US giants are often accused of purely taking and giving nothing back to the domestic industry in a country that is clearly their second largest market. However the Brits are no longer going to take it lying down.
On April 1st the top names on the British scene are coming together to give their answer to the WWE’s annual WrestleMania event. Yet unlike their American counter parts, who will be charging to watch it on TV in the UK, this event will be completely free of charge to attend. Better still, it is all in aid of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
Taking place at the Coronet Theatre in Elephant and Castle, the event will feature the very best wrestling action in Europe from an industry that has received more mainstream TV, newspaper and radio coverage in the last 12 months than any year since it was pulled from ITV. Even actors union Equity have recently accepted British wrestlers as members for the first time ever! A full on revival of the glory days once seen by British wrestling is believed to be imminent.
Alex Shane has been a wrestling consultant for ITV, BBC, MTV, Talksport and several of America’s top companies wanting to get a foothold in the UK. “The last decade has really been about putting the groundwork in place for a large and long-lasting British Wrestling resurgence and in the last year the huge media buzz we’ve received has led many to believe that 2012 is that year that we stand together, united and put our once globally- respected domestic wrestling industry firmly back on the map. BritWres-Fest 2012 is the crown jewel in our capâ€.
There have never been so many wrestlers from the United Kingdom becoming recognised stars all over the world as there are today in the top US and Japanese companies, and it is a fact that there are also more wrestling fans in England per square mile than in any other country on the planet. Could the UK be ready to finally get back a slice of what has now become a multibillion dollar business? A business it played a vital role in creating.
BritWres-Fest 2012, which takes place on the same day as this year’s WWEWrestleMania, will see the UK’s top wrestling companies all sponsor a match each to allow tickets for this massive event to be free of charge for all to attend, other than a non mandatory, minimum donation of £1 to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Jamie Hadley, who organised the BritWres-Fest 2011 alongside the Old Vic Theatreand Ideastap, said “Last year’s event was a massive success but we now want to top that by a country mile. We want people to walk in and say wow, this is just as spectacular as the American stuff and the in-ring action is even better! We are pulling out all the stops and working with a huge list of contributors to make this a wrestling event of global proportions. This is our chance to show the media and the world what British Wrestling is all about in 2012 and we are not going to waste itâ€.
FREE Tickets, and a VERY limited number of ringside and VIP balcony tickets available from:
