DENVER -- Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday in what appears to be the end of his career with New York.

Rodriguez's decision, announced by agent Scott Boras during Game 4 of the World Series, makes him eligible to become a free agent.

Rodriguez loses the final $72 million in guaranteed salary in the contract, of which $21.3 million was to be covered by payments from the Texas Rangers to the Yankees. New York had said it would not attempt to re-sign A-Rod if he opted out.

Boras said during a telephone interview Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees.

"Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer, his catcher and one of his statured pitchers was going to do," Boras said. "He really didn't want to make any decisions until he knew where they were going."

I want A-Rod in Anaheim, but he'll probably end up in Chicago

Chicago or L.A. seem likely. Sox should re-sign Lowell. He was the MVP after all.

As for A-Rod helping his team, we'll wait and see. His personal numbers are the through the roof but he's never taken his team to the next level.

Dodger-Bound!

Hopefully he and Joe Torre will go to the Dodgers, but then again, the Pirates aren't paying anyone, maybe they can afford him.

ROFL, the Pirates. I can only see 5 teams affording him. Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Angels, and Cubs. Yankees have been bashing the hell out of him since, so I dont see him going back there. I see it down to either the Sox or the Cubs. Prolly the Sox, just b/c of the way the Yanks have been treating him as of late and with Lowell being a free agent, I could see the Red Sox picking him up

I find if funny that this was announced just as the Sox were on the verge of winning the WS.

And I hope Boston DOESN'T sign him. Lowell is better defensively at third, and though Mike is older, he's shown that he can hit in October. something that A-Rod has yet to do despite getting paid an insane amount of money.

A Rod and the Yankees must've wanted to shit on the Sox for what they did. During the game A Rod opts out and less than a day after all reports are about Girardi being offered managerial position, not the Sox winning the World Series.

Well we could have a deal between the Pirates and the city of Pittsburgh and we can raise taxes (the A-Rod Tax) to fund A-Rod's salary and get rid of every high paying player that we have. I think it would be worth it. Not only for the Pirates but for our economy and youth and the educational system. A-Rod to the Pirates FTW!

I think the Rangers should take him back, they had the money before, they traded away Lofton, Gange, Texieria and Rupe...I don't see why they wouldn't have money now :shifty:..but god damn...the Rangers are still paying him :nonono:...RANGERS FTW
