- The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was #1 at the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing in $29.9 million and raising it's take at the worldwide box office to $614 million. Thus far, Peter Jackson has been at the helm of five movies that are based on the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, and here is how they have done at the worldwide box office…

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - $ 1.12 billion
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $1.02 billion
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - $926 million
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - $871 million
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - $614 million thus far

So far, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings & Hobbit films have made $4.55 billion at the worldwide box office. The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be released on December 17th, 2014
