Starz' drama series Boss earned Kelsey Grammer plenty of praise and a deserved Golden Globe for his portrayal of the fictional Chicago Mayor Tom Kane, but unfortunately, the series wasn't able to draw a large audience and it looks like Starz has decided to call it quits on the series after its second season.
Boss starred Grammer as a powerful and intimidating mayor who was secretly suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder that threatened to knock him off his post if anyone were to find out. The series focused on Kane trying to deal with the disease while also running the city and facing Chicago's problems (and anyone who tried to get in his way) head on. Also among the cast were Connie Nielsen, Kathleen Robertson and Hannah Ware. Tip "T.I." Harris joined the show in Season 2, playing the role of Trey.
EW reported today that Starz has decided not to renew the drama for a third season. The site included the following statement from Starz:
“After much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with Boss,†the network said in a statement. “We remain proud of this award-winning show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to Kelsey Grammer, Farhad Safinia and our partners at Lionsgate TV.â€
It's unfortunate news for those who wanted to see how Tom Kane's story wrapped up, but not all that surprising when you look at the numbers, which were never very strong.
While Boss may be over, Starz has a number of projects in the works, including the final season of Spartacus, which premieres in January, the return of Magic City, and the arrival of a few new series, including Da Vinci's Demons, The White Queen and Black Sails.
