Whatever you think of the films so far (the general consensus being that "Casino Royale" is one of the best ever entries of the franchise, and "Quantum of Solace" was something of a disappointing follow-up), few would argue that Daniel Craig has disappointed as the sixth incarnation of James Bond. Beating out the likes of Henry Cavill and Sam Worthington to the role, Craig wasn't an obvious choice, causing certain dim sections of fans to complain in advance that he was 'too blonde' and 'not attractive enough' to play Ian Fleming's creation. But the actor soon banished any doubts by proving appropriately suave and sexy in the part, while retaining the cruelty that had been absence since Connery, and adding a greater psychological realism that's worked beautifully for a modern-era Bond.
With the incredibly promising "Skyfall" set to be unveiled next month, the question has to be asked: how much longer will Craig stay in the role? The actor originally signed a three-film contract, and given that he's staying busy outside the franchise, including the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" franchise, one wondered if he might start to feel a little restless, despite the hopes of producers that he might stick around to beat the seven-film record in the series set by Roger Moore (Connery starred in six, plus unofficial entry "Never Say Never Again"). But if recent reports are accurate, we might see Craig sticking around for a little longer.

Fan-site MI6 say they've confirmed Craig has upped his contract to stick around for two more films after "Skyfall," and that the actor will return for the 24th and 25th entries in the series, bringing him to five altogether (one more than predecessor in the role, Pierce Brosnan). Backers Sony are said to favor a return to the one-film-every-two-years template that was interrupted by MGM's financial difficulties, although production company EON and Craig are said to be keen on a longer break between pictures in order to crack the script and to give the actor a bit of a break.

Although the news should be taken with a slight pinch of salt until official word arrives, it's not a huge surprise that Craig wants to stay involved -- the actor's had some difficulties establishing his box office credentials elsewhere, with "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Dream House" both flopping, but a Bond film every few years means the actor stays bankable and gets the freedom to do more personal projects. And if they continue to attract talent like Sam Mendes and John Logan, the director and writer of "Skyfall," we're sure Craig will be keen to stick around for a little longer. We'll see the extent to which "Skyfall" shows the future of the 007 franchise when the film opens in Europe on October 26th and in the U.S. on November 9th.

Hope this is true as he is in the top 3 bonds of all time if not the #1. Good choice or time to move on?

I like Daniel Craig in the role I just think that he was stuck with a bad script for the last Bond. Quantom of Solace was a bad film because it was an action film rather than a Bond film. It was missing the gadgets, it was missing the humour, it was missing the campness, it was missing Bond getting the girl in the end. It just had lots of explosions and that doesn't make a Bond film.

I am glad that they are signing him long term though because I think that he is the best option out there, other than Hugh Jackman. If they get some better scriptwriters on board that actually remember what Bond is all about he will be fine.

No I like Crieg as Bond think he brings that more gritty, steely edge which the likes of Timothy Delton and Conneny to a lesser extent did. I don't see why the colour of his hair matters. Hope he gets at least four films.

I don't get why the colour of his hair matters either. Roger Moore had light coloured hair and people didn't complain that much about him. I agree that he has come across as a tougher Bond which is a good change after Brosnan went the Moore route with a fair bit of comedy. I still don't think they had the mix right for Quantam of Solace but hopefully they fix that for Skyfall.

Just people with no life looking to create a story out of nothing I guess.

Haha my favorite Bond film (Licence to Kill) had none of that stuff either.

I like Craig and think he's a good actor but the films haven't offered much excitement IMO, seems like every movie has to be grim and dark nowdays, prol due to the success of The Dark Knight every producer copies that formula.

I saw the trailer for the film, it looks impressive but I'm not sure about the PG rating. I think Bond needs to be at least a 12 for a really exciting action packed film tbh.

I take your point but I think that is as result of changeing times with filmmakers trying to keep up with fans demand for something fresh. Don't forget Bond has now been going fifty years and Skyfall will be the 23rd film in the series so I shift in direction is needed IMO.

I like Licence to Kill as well and I think that Dalton is under-rated as Bond. That actually felt like a Bond film though whereas Quantom of Solace just felt like an action film to me. The script for LTK was a hell of a lot better and it still had a connection to the gadgets with Q in there and had more humour than this latest one. They did stray away from the Bond formula more than before and made it darker but I don't think it went as far as QOS.

God with all this Bond talk I really want to see this new movie to see how it compares. Or better than that I may have to have a marathon again and watch them all before the new one comes out.

I am probably in the minority here, but I think Bonds expiry date has come and gone? He's a one dimensional character in a 3d world that blurs the lines of black and white into shades of grey and Bond always wears the white hat.

Casino and Quantam tried to blur the lines, but it just made him look sociopathic.

He had a good run, some movies notwithstanding. Bourne identity raised the bar he can't reach. Bourne Legacy sucked tho.

I think there's only so far you can go with the films, and I kinda agree with you. I mean people moan when there's 3 sequels in a film series, and although Bond films aren't necessarily a sequel to the past ones they all follow the same core plot.

^ But that is why the series works best when they change the format if you look at The Living Daylights it was a new kind of Bond film to them more cheesy Roger Moore version, and agian the recent ones have been more modern and high tech. Also to answer part of deezy's point you tend to watch Bond more for the villians, theme tunes, girls and stunts so the fact the lead character doesn't have much depth does not matter really.

I think that there is still life in it yet as long as there are enough good screenplays out there for the series. They have done a decent job of switching things up each time they change lead actor to keep the series interesting. I will keep watching the series as I am still a big fan of the whole character and concept.
