A New York City Parks Department worker in the Bronx walked into work this morning to find a an unwelcome sign of hate: an African-American baby doll, dressed in bright pink, hung by a noose made of metal chains in front of the loading dock, an area only department workers can access.
Geoffrey Croft broke the news today on his blog, A Walk in the Park "There should be zero tolerance for this kind of behavior at any time... Obviously the imagery is pretty terrible and from what I understand, the worker who found it is pretty traumatized."
In 2008 the Parks Department settled a lawsuit for over 20 million dollars filed by employees charging a racially hostile work environment. This latest incident highlights that painful past.
In addition to the doll, the letters "KKK" were also found scrawled in the bathroom. The Parks Department Commissioner released this statement today in response to what happened:
"The Parks Department does not tolerate hateful acts such as this or any form of discrimination. We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace for all staff. We immediately reported this incident to the NYPD and are fully cooperating in their investigation. We urge anyone with knowledge of this matter to immediately contact the NYPD so that the perpetrator or perpetrators can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
