Bellator Fighting Championships is considering a trip to Nevada.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission today revealed that the tournament-based promotion has applied for a promoter's license in the state, and MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) has confirmed with promotion officials that the state is under consideration for a future Bellator fight card.
"Nevada has a spectacular fighting sports history," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told MMAjunkie.com. "In the coming year, we may look to bring a Bellator event to the great state of Nevada."
Nevada, of course, is the longtime home of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the sport's largest promotion. Competing organizations have generally shied away from holding events in the state (though the International Fight League did visit the state twice and EliteXC had an event planned for Nevada before the promotion shuttered its doors).
Bellator of course, wouldn't have to visit Las Vegas – the UFC's backyard – and could instead favor a visit to the Reno/Lake Tahoe area.
The NSAC will address Bellator's application at their monthly meeting, which takes place Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas.
This should be interesting.
