Most games nowadays periodically release updates to add functionality or improve stability. Now, this is a good thing. More content and fewer bugs is always good. What isn't so good is having to wait several minutes (for each patch you haven't downloaded: this can build up if you haven't played a game for several months, especially an online-heavy game) before you can start to play. If you wish to play offline, you can choose to not download the patch, and subsequently, to be reminded every five minutes that there is a new patch available.
Apparently, in an upcoming firmware update, functionality will be added to detect all installed games and automatically find and background download patches. This doesn't sound particularly easy to implement, but it would be fantastic if true. In fact, just allowing background patch downloads while the game is running would be a step forward. These rumors are often false, but on occasion, one rings true. So, cross your fingers, but don't get your hopes up.

Sony, as always, declined to comment.

It would be a pretty neat feature. But I've only seen a few games have long update times(*cough* Metal Gear Online) and a few others. The vast majority just have quick updates that don't take more than two minutes. I know I love the background downloading but this isn't a big deal. Background installs would be a lot better though PS3 games have gotten a lot better by either not having an install period or showing something cool while it installs.
