Nick Diaz may find out tomorrow what sentence he faces for failing a drug test at UFC 143.

The former Strikeforce champion tested positive for marijuana during tests administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which was overseeing the event. According to a friend of the Diaz camp, he is on the agenda for a meeting of the NSAC board tomorrow.

Having previously tested positive for marijuana once before under Nevada’s auspices, Diaz faces a longer ban than the six months imposed following the 2007 instance.

However, the scale of his transgression is not yet known. Nevada, like most athletic commissions, allows a level of 50mg of marijuana traces in the bloodstream. That is considered ‘out of season’ use which would not directly affect the fight.

The meeting will take place at 9am Las Vegas time and will be chaired by NSAC’s executive director Keith Kizer. The main purpose of the meeting - at least, the one listed on the NSAC website - is to discuss possible changes to the rules used for MMA competitions in the state.

NSAC has been soliciting suggestions from the public all month and will be discussing the most popular of these tomorrow. If any are enacted, the unified rules will be altered accordingly and the MMA game will change to some degree - in Nevada at least, although other athletic commissions usually take their pointers from NSAC and could be expected to copy the changes.

Could face a year suspension, but i really don't think it'll be that long. And he'll probably have a fine or something to go along with whatever else gets thrown his way.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission on Wednesday levied a temporary suspension against Nick Diaz after testing positive for marijuana for his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 143.

The commission met on Wednesday and voted unanimously to place Diaz under a temporary suspension until a disciplinary hearing could be held later this year.

The hearing will most likely take place in April when the commission will decide Diaz’s ultimate fate.

The commissioners did ask for some additional information to be provided at the next meeting where Diaz’s discipline will be handed down.

The commission requested any and all information surrounding Diaz’s previous suspension in the state from his fight in February 2007 when he also tested positive for marijuana after his fight with Takanori Gomi in Pride. Diaz was suspended for six months and his fight was ruled a no contest.

They also requested any information on his full fight purse and any bonuses paid out to him as well as his full application that was submitted prior to the fight.

The commissioners also mentioned that Diaz is licensed for medicinal marijuana use in the state of California, and they would have additional research regarding that matter when they reconvene later this year for the hearing.

For now, Diaz is simply suspended until the commission meets to decide his final fate. Based on past occurrences of a similar nature where a fighter has tested positive for marijuana a second time in the state, a one-year suspension was handed down.
