The Oakland Athletics announced that righthander Sean Murphy, a member of the organization since 2010, unexpectedly died on Monday in Arizona.
The 27-year-old had not pitched in an official game since 2014 as he rehabilitated from Tommy John surgery. He was suspended for 50 games in February after testing positive for a drug of abuse.
“The A’s are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Sean Murphy,” said Billy Beane, Oakland’s executive vice president for baseball operations in a statement released by the team. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
Murphy’s path to pro baseball was not an easy one. He was one of the standouts on the Keystone (Pa.) College team from 2008-2010, ranking among the school’s career leaders in wins and ERA. But not many players are drafted out of Division III programs. The A’s drafted Murphy in the 33rd round. Unlike many 33rd-round picks, Murphy staked a long-term claim on a job. He pitched in the A’s system for five seasons before his elbow injury, making it to Triple-A and going 32-32, 4.26 in 491 innings in his career.
Some of Murphy’s minor league teammates and Keystone College paid tribute to him on Twitter.
